Anagram and Lions Gate Bring us Fido the Zombie
Anagram Pictures and Lions Gate Films are developing a rather unusual zombie movie, which Andrew Currie ("Mile Zero") will direct.
"Fido" is set in the small town of Willard, which is lost in the idyllic world of the 50's, where the sun shines every day, everybody knows their neighbor, and rotting zombies carry the mail.
Years ago, the earth passed through a cloud of space dust, causing the dead to rise with an insatiable hunger for human flesh. Terror spread across the land, until a collar was invented that made the zombies docile, even useful. A company was born: ZomCon.
Thanks to their patented domestication collar™, zombies became gardeners, milkmen, butlers, and even pets. ZomCon would like everyone to believe that they have the world under control - but do they?

It sounds like a great premis for a film - a boy and his zombie!!

Since it's Lions Gate distributing, there may be a good chance of a theatrical release. They're the only ones that finally got House of 1000 Corpses out after it got screwed so many times and it paid off for them so they are definitely the best choice for something this far out in left field.

sounds interesting, the more zombie movies in the theaters the better. the video store where i live has a minor selection (though all the ones they have are extremely good) and i am always looking for a chance to see new terror from the undead

It's a bit of rubbish name for a film though, is it going to have family pets wrestling with the postman and pulling their arm off? You'd of thought something like "The Last Post" or "Dead Drop Letterbox" would've been a better choice. But Fido...?
Reminds me of a friend who didn't want to watch Ghost Dog because he thought it was about a poltergeist pooch....!

06-03-2005, 04:27 PM
Wow!! I never even made the connection with the name "Fido" possibly referring to a dog since the movie is about postal carriers. Guess we'll have to wait and see but that does weaken it a bit for me.

The fact that Carrie Ann Moss is in it kinda' makes me think that it might be somewhat well-acted. After all, she was in Memento.

They certainly don't leave much to guess on what happens so I guess I should advise a SPOILER ALERT here. Sounds awesome though!!! Guess there's no dog involved after all!

And who is playing the zombie? The Big Yin!!! A rather controversial tke on this:
Billy's decapitation role
Movie set to reignite Bigley row
Billy Connolly, who was vilified in the press for his comments over executed British hostage Ken Bigley, is to decapitate a character in his next film.
The 63-year-old comic will slice off a zombie’s head with a shovel in the new a new comedy horror movie Fido, which starts filming in Canada today.
It is a role likely to reignite the barrage of criticism he faced when, in a comment on blanket media coverage of the hostage crisis, Connolly told a London audience he wished those who captured Bigley “would just get on with it". Days later he was beheaded.
In Fido, Connolly plays the 6ft 4in domesticated zombie of the title alongside fellow actors Dylan Baker and Carrie-Anne Moss.

I'm a big fan of the Big Yin (despite his not keeping his mouth shut) but I do wonder how well he will play the part. The again he did play Queen Victoria's ghillie well and that is, I suppose, a smilar part so.....

Scott Weinberg of efilmcritic.com 4/5 stars.
"Fido" opens with an amusing little newsreel that sets a perfect tone for the tasty genre cocktail that follows. Much more of a comedy than a horror-fest, "Fido" should find fans on both sides of the genre fence. It's a strange, sly, oddly subtle, and rather weirdly satisfying little tale -- and it's easily one of the most entertaining Canadian films I've seen in some time.

I'm definitely going to check out Fido. The theme of a robot-like 'zombie' as a house butler or maid ties into "The Jetsons" robot maid, Rosie, Bicentenial Man (Never saw it, but R. Williams plays a robot maid), and an episode of the New Outer Limits (A robot butler replaces the father). But unlike a robot, a zombie butler will add a fresh stink to the household...

I like the idea of the neck collars that are supposed to keep them under control.
How did the general populace get them on in the first place? And would you really trust one to work all the time?
I like all the guns around the home as well. It fits well with the repressed tone of the time that the film is set. It's almost like you want someone to point and scream "They're zombies! What the hell are we thinking?!" rather than just loosen their collar slightly. The Dad is me, and I am the Dad.
A beautiful take on the zombie movie. I can't wait for this one!
Edit---
Does this film have parallels to Old Yeller? I've never seen it myself, but I've heard stuff...terrible stuff...

Yeah, I checked on the Internet Movie Data Base and it looks like Fido is opening this weekend at two theaters:
NuArt (LA)
Angelika (NY)
If the movie does well this weekend, then they will release it all across the country. If people don't fill the seats in those two theaters on Friday and Saturday, then the only other cities it'll be released in are Seattle, San Diego, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston and Dallas.
So L.A. and New York will determine whether everybody else gets to see it. If you live near those two theaters, go see it this weekend so the rest of us can! :)

Just rented Fido tonight and watched it - I thought it was a great little film and I certainly plan to add it to my DVD collection. It offered a nice change from the usual cliched zombie movie storylines with good performances and some nice light humour. Billy Connelly's titular character has to be the most endearing zombie since 'Bub'. I give it two thumbs up - one of the best zombie films I've seen in awhile.

Here's my netflix review. :)
Fido is a fresh addition to the sub-genre kingdom of zombidom. Take one part Dawn Of The Dead (1978), two parts The Andy Griffith Show, stir in a little Bub from Day Of The Dead (1985) and bake until slightly green. This was a lot of fun. The zombie makeup was done right, the color scheme was brilliant, the acting was spot on and the script was well thought out. This one was made for the zombie fans collection, but is good fun for the whole family as well.

Great scenery with even better acting on everybodys' part as well as alot of funny moments. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed it and am very glad it's in my collection, but it just didn't get to me like it seems to have gotten to alot of people. Reminded me of Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands a lot. I'm surprised it was an R rating, for the minor gore scenes, felt like a PG. I liked Fido, the kid reminded me of Home Alone's Culkin. Carrie Ann Moss from the Matrix is the mom. Zombie's treated like house-maid robots. Original take on zombies, a bit like watching an episode of Lassie.

I enjoyed this flick a great deal. No, it's no SOTD, but I don't see it as so much a straight-out comedy as much as a parody of the 1950's, as idealized in pop culture (and recent retro movies set during that period). The "Lassie" comment was right on target ("What's the matter Fido, is Timmy in trouble?"). It's a fun movie, and Billy is great in the role.
My two and a half year old son loves this movie, and he has lately been watching it about as often as he watches "Day of the Dead" (i.e., at least once every few days). Although he has not yet started acting out the movie like he does with "Day" (for example, my boy will often grab his throat as if bitten and yell "Take me" until I shoot him in the head, and cannot see a helicopter without yelling "Hello -addybody in dayr?"), he enjoys flipping back and forth between "Fido" and "The Iron Giant," which are in many ways quite similar.
So, if Fido is as lovable to toddlers as is Bub, I'd say it's a classic.

The Necro taboo was breached by the neighbor and Tammy. The Mom’s flirtations towards Fido were a minor rebellion against the sexual repression of her day. Similar to a middle-aged woman’s flirting with the pool boy. Never acted upon, but liberating in a small way. It gives her a modicum of control and power, even if she has to use her female charms. This played off against her husband’s lack of sexual confidence due to his inability to exert his masculine authority over his wife’s yearning for some equality of the sexes. His fear of zombies, and her having acquired a zombie are a major power shift in their 50’s family paradigm. As for Fido, the sexual tension humanized him a bit in our eyes.
I like that the movie did not go for gags, but was a funny parody of the “perfect” family lifestyle of the Eisenhower years. I also appreciate that the movie fully respected the zombie genre, and had fun with it.

Agreed, Owen. The premise was terrific, and could have made for an instant-classic. Unfortunately, the delivery was a bit disappointing for me. All in all, it was a decent movie, and it was refreshing to see a zombie movie with such a different feel to it ... but at the end of the day, there was limited re-watchability for me.
