Graveyard At Midnight

Hello to my extended family of fellow zombie lovers. My name is Vince Churchill and a couple of years back I wrote and published my first novel called The Dead Shall Inherit The Earth. The story features mercenaries fighting for survival against zombies aboard a spaceship. It was a ton of fun to write and I’ve been very happy with the response from readers. I’ve recently returned to the scene of the crime and did some editing on it, though as with any first time project, it’s very hard to be satisfied with the final result. It’s a fun, fast read and if you haven’t checked it out, I invite you to do so. It is available through all major online booksellers, including Amazon.com and Shocklines.com. Shocklines.com sell signed copies.
I really dropped in today because I’d like to introduce you all to my latest book, The Blackest Heart. The first question I should address right off is that it is not a traditional zombie book. It’s actually a futuristic revenge novel with elements of horror and westerns. In the acknowledgements I mention The Crow, Spawn, Batman & the old Clint Eastwood western High Plains Drifter as major influences. I wanted to write an ice-cold revenge novel, but I craved using a hero returning from the dead to even the score. I for one believe The Crow is one of the great zombie movies/graphic novels in the history of the subgenre. When a man literally claws his way out of a grave to live again, albeit briefly, I have to classify him as a zombie. That is the basic qualification the hero in my new book meets. I just swapped the urge to munch guts with an all-consuming hunger for revenge.
The story is pretty straight forward. In the future (the same time frame as my first book) a retired lawman is murdered and his family devastated. In the midst of his death, he is given an opportunity from a mysterious entity to return and gain revenge against the men/mutants that killed him, brutalized his wife and kidnapped his daughter. The deal has him enhanced with powers born of darkness in exchange for the entity’s ability to feed from the evil “essence” of those the resurrected marshal kills during his quest. But the deal does not turn out to be quite what the lawman expected…you all know the saying, “Be careful what you wish for.”
The book has an intriguing hero who straddles the blurry line between good and evil, and the mutant villains are lethal fun. Readers have enjoyed the action and the drama, and there have been no complaints about the sex scenes.
I realize it is not the traditional Night of the Living Dead type zombie book, but I think if you consider The Crow or even Spawn as having a strong zombie element at the heart of its basic story, I think you’ll really enjoy my book. Again, it’s called The Blackest Heart, and it is available at most online bookstores. Amazon.com has a bunch of reviews available.
And for those who enjoyed The Dead Shall Inherit The Earth and are wondering if I will be dipping my toe into zombie water again, well, I think I’ve made the cut and should have a short story in the upcoming The Undead anthology from Jacob Kier & Permuted Press. And in the midst of brainstorming for that, I stumbled upon a great idea for a zombie novel that I will write after my current project is completed. I have to say that Brian Keene’s The Rising has raised the bar for zombie novel fans and as both a reader and fan, I fully embrace the challenge of creating equally passionate and entertaining stories for zombie readers and lovers of horror and dark fiction in general. I hope you’ll find big fun in my work as I continue to grow as a writer. I look forward to becoming an author readers can count on for quality horror fiction.
