View Full Version : The Host or Cloverfield?
Which film did you like better?
I have both The Host and Cloverfield on dvds.
I must say that The Host was pretty damn lame to me and the creature looked like a giant snail lol.
I liked Cloverfield alot and thought that the CGI in it was well done and that the characters were good and pretty damn funny at times. I thought that the monster in it looked pretty cool too.
So which film did you like better?

I liked Cloverfield and it stands up well in repeat viewings. The Host is a pretty impactful movie and hits kind of hard. To me, it's a great movie. Showing the creature that early and maintaining a high level of suspense is pretty damn rare these days.
I voted for Cloverfield simply because of it's repeat value.

I haven't seen the Host yet so I'll reserve voting until I get to watch it but I will say this about Cloverfield. The entire beginning was boring as hell and I almost shut it off, the second half was cool and the creature was entertaining....:eat:

I have to say this is the lamest set of replies to a 'this or that' thread because so few of you have seen the Host.
Cloverfield was a good film but honestly it peaked early. By the time we actually had the film the hype had died out. Can anyone who's a fan say they have seen the film anywhere near as many times as they watched that first trailer looking for clues?
That aside as a stand alone it did a lot of good... but I agree with the comment that the middle bottoms out. The shakey camera is a bit cliche at it's point. I think it's a bit played out. It's a good film but nothing amazing.
Now the Host gave away nothing before hand and just out of the blue success. The setup is a bit played out but they played it well. This film combines elements of an end of the world movie with a creature feature and for it's faults... this blend is something which should be explored in more detail. The Host takes place over weeks... compared to Cloverfield's bad night. It gives the characters time to feel loss before they move on.
I give it to The Host for the sake of combining element of the post apocalyptic world with the monster movie. I think we need more movies testing that ground. Hopefully we get one which blows them both away.

The Host does blow Cloverfield away in terms of filmmaking and writing and acting. Cloverfield had a great marketing campaign and built suspense before the film was even released. It made, what, 80 million bucks on the back of viral websites? The Host wasn't really marketed and most of the buzz came from Ain't it Cool News. It is a genuinely good movie and works because it shows it's cards early but ups the ante every few minutes.
Both of these movies seem to get lumped together because they came out around the same time but they are worlds apart in terms of themes, style etc. In my opinion is a bad comparison.

Idk if it's a bad comparison. I mean they are both modern giant monster films dealing with this aquatic style creature coming ashore and splitting up a group of connected people leading them to work towards reuniting and having them do so but not getting the chance to enjoy that reunion for long.
There is enough reason why they are lumped together. But it's the same as lumping Mel Brook's Dracula Dead and Loving It and Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula in together. Yes made around the same time... featuring the same basic cast of characters but handled in completely different ways.

I still say the Host creature looked like a giant snail and wasn't scary looking at all. I disliked the characters in that film too.

Even though I loved Cloverfield, I thought Rifftrax's commentary of the movie was just plain hilarious!

Sorry for the crappy quality. I didn't make it, so don't blame me!

I went with Cloverfield. I thought it was more entertaining. I thought the 1st creature attack in The Host was amazing, but I didn't feel the rest of the film matched that sequence again.

I really liked The Host, but Cloverfield would be my pick.
I need to watch Cloverfield again sometime soon cause I recall the one guy was funny in it.

Cloverfield. The Host was good but not a great film that I was led to believe.

I preferred Cloverfield, but The Host also had a lot to admire about it. Cloverfield was better acted and the story was more exciting/thrilling. Whereas, although The Host had a better storyline, I found myself disliking the characters portrayed. It's not a good sign when you are rooting against the main players.

I watched The Host on Netflix on the PS3. It was ok. A little boring in parts. The Korean and Japanese horror films can tend to bog down in the middle and end, though. This one was no exception.
