I'm not sure how well this will translate into US culture, but I'm watching Shaun of the Dead (for the 50th time!) and started thinking... is this how we would really cope with a zombie outbreak? Think about it. We all like to think we would cope really well and do the Resident Evil thing, but in reality wouldn't we really be throwing anything we could, from toasters to records, and laughing at everything, cos we wouldn't believe it was really happening? I know SotD is a comedy but it is actually very realistic if you think about it. Sometimes, the comedy versions like SotD sum up the reality!
What does everyone else think?

I know I would be throwing everything I could at them. So maybe a lot of other people would be too.

Yeah, but isn't that the point? On ATZ we all talk about kicking th poo out of zombies, but lets look at the reality. Wouldn't we just be unbelieving at what what going on, and how many people would die before anyone took it seriously? That's why films like SotD are probably the most releastic films out there. It is interesting that they have to be comedy before we see that is the way we would probably act in that situation.

We are pre-armed with a specific knowledge. So, if Romero zombies start cropping up, we already know we can out walk them, and we have to shoot them in the head. If Rage virus victims (um, call them what you like) pop up, we know don’t get bit, and kill them all. Pretty convenient that we are pre-armed with knowledge about an outrageous and terrifying phenomenon that no human has ever faced.
I submit that the first ever zombie attack might not be anything like any movie or book. In that case, what you know may be completely invalid, what you face may be completely unlike anything you ever imagined, and who knows how we are going to react to a completely novel circumstance?
It’s like, the Titanic is sinking. Jack, who has never been anywhere or done anything is faced with a phenomenon that is new to the entire world, the sinking of this massive “unsinkable” ship. And yet, he knows exactly what to do at all times. And, he is brave enough and resourceful enough to do it. Yeah, right.

I like that the humor is more reality based and comes from the situation. I think it's pretty much what a lot of people would do. Freak out but also joke around, you know, the "gallow" type humor. I work in an ER and me and some co workers always joke about people dying. It's not funny but in a pressure filled situation where you have a lot death/injury/stuff we find it relieves a lot of stress.
