I've recently noticed a trend in horror movies where the bad guys win which really should be the case anyway as they are horror films but sometimes it is infuriating. I watched Eden Lake last night with my wife & it didn't end well, it bothered her more but it was slightly annoying. Other films that have been like this recently are The Mist & Funny Games which i loved.. What's the general opinion on this & does anyone think the film makers are just trying to be controversial?

Something that I've noticed a long time ago is that "the good guys only win in the movies"....
I think you might have a point, I just watched the Strangers not to long ago and it was a bad guy flick...
One reason that I like zombie stories is because in many of the stories it's all hopeless, it doesn't matter what you do....we're all doomed....:scare: Now it seems to be a common theme....

"Or they could be just making sure a sequel is possible."

 Good point but we don't need a sequel to the Strangers... though, the sad thing is that if they did make a sequel I'd watch it...:x
:eat: That's how I role....

It's very rare that I am upset/annoyed/bothered by weather or not the protagonist lives or dies in the end of a horror film. I do agree with zombie surfer that I think a lot of film makers are just trying to be controversial? by making everybody die at the end. It's like they think the good guys winning is too cliched to let it happen in their movies, when they are almost making the opposite true now.
I didn't see Eden Lake or Funny Games. I did see The Mist though. Wasn't it based on a Stephen King book? I assumed they just ended it the same way it ended in the book. And I didn't think The Mist followed the new horror trend of everybody dieing in the end. If they had just gotten attacked by some big mist monser and slaughtered, then yea that wouldn't have been very original and it would have been like so many others were the ending is simply "everybody dies." I thought the ending for The Mist was really great.

I thought the ending for the mist was cool. It was based on A short King story from the Skeleton Crew but the ending in it was they just drove off into the sunset. The film ending was very bleak cause he killed everyone for no reason but it was cool.:)

Well if you think about it, it's gotta end one way or the other. I have to agree that the bad guy winning has become really popular...I don't mind though, because I'm the type of girl who generally falls for the bad guy! But yea, it needs to stop being convenient, and start fitting better with the story.

this is definatly an unfortunate trend in horror lately, its the next evolution of my "one cool guy" theory , which is where there is always that 1 bad ass, funny or whatever character ( could be a guy or woman ) that EVERYONE really likes and that character ALWAYS dies , this really just takes it to the next level but killing everyone,
though in all fairness with the bunch of unlikable douchbags theyve been filling horror movies with lately id rather see em all get snuffed then to have one of the unlikable little shits get away.
