In other words, what made you become a horror movie fan?

I'm 38 years old and watched my first horror film which was Jaws back in 1975 in the theater when I was 5 years old with my parents and have been a horror fanatic ever sense. I recall at an early age watching the tv commercial for the 70's film called Beyond the Door and it creeped me out as a kid. I also recall seeing Trilogy of Terror on tv when I was a kid. I was suppose to be in bed but I watched it behind the couch in the den when my parents were watching it lol.

I think my first slasher film was Halloween when it aired on tv for the first time on NBC back in 1981 right before the sequel Halloween 2 came out. After that I became a slasher fan big time in the 80's and use to rent them all the time after school or football practice.

As of now I have 976 total dvds in my collection with 799 being horror films. I also have over 200 movies on vhs with around 175-80 being horror films. I have framed movie(theatrical) posters on my wall of the likes of Halloween, Friday the 13th, Jaws, etc......

So I have been a horror fan for 33 years now and keeping it up.

Probably the Friday the 13th movies.
They scared me half to death.
Now, I own all of them. Except for Jason X, that is crap. :poo:

Like you RIP, I'm 38 and remember seeing Jaws in the theater with my hands over my eyes for most of the movie....

My dad was into horror movies and I used to sneak up late at night to watch creature feature and such, I would get caught and told to go back to bed but just as often he invited me to come watch them with him. :) I remember seeing NotD and Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things, they are my earliest memories of watching zombie movies.

I saw the original DotD in the theater with my older brother and father when I was 9. I remember the ticket lady looking down at me, then looking at my father and asking are you sure you want him to watch the movie, it's "pretty graphic". (something along those lines) My dad looked down at me and I looked up at him and with a big grin and nodding "yes" we proceeded into the theater...:scare:

Life has never been the same. I've loved horror and sci-fi my entire life. And here I am on ATZ....:drinking: Cool thread RIP...:guns:

I'm 44... and was lucky. Mom took me to see ALL the old Unversal monsters on the big screen starting when I was two! We'd go every weekend. Wolf Man scared the crap outta me when I got a bit older to be scared.. I guess after that.. it was seeing Dawn of the Dead on cable.. Friday the 13th, Jaws, Alien.. all on the big screen.. very nice..

I'm 35 years old & my earliest memory of horror was the tv commercial for The Shinning where Jack is chasing his wife through the snow, it still creeps me out. The first film i saw was The Amityville Horror at the tender age of 8 then shortly after American Werewolf in London. I was exposed to more brutal films such as A Nightmare on Elm Street from my older sister who would rent all these cool horror films which i would watch the next day or with her if my parents were out. My first zombie flick was either ROTLD or Re-Aminator, after that i was hooked & here i am.

I forgot to mention that also as a kid I recall watching Revenge of the Creature on tv in black in white and it was in 3D. You had to go to a convience store back then and when you got a slushie they gave you free 3D glasses for this tv movie that came on tv around Halloween time.

I also recall watching Kiss meets the Phantom of the Park on tv after trick or treating lol.:drinking:

I'm 41, and my first monster movie was The Giant Spider Invasion (1975). These days that film seems so tame. But, at that time, it fed into my arachnophobia. I had been bitten by a Black Widow as a child about three or four years before that film came out. It was a horrible experience, even though it did not kill me; the pain was incredible. I do NOT recommend being bitten by a Black Widow (or any spider for that matter).

Mystery Science Theater 3000 did an episode for The Giant Spider Invasion. So, I can laugh about it now. I still HATE, HATE, HATE spiders.

I also went and saw Jaws in that same year (1975). But, it was not nearly as frightening for me as the much less realistic The Giant Spider Invasion. But, the lady that sat behind me and my two older brothers freaked out during a few scenes of Jaws. At one point, she tossed her popcorn box in the air and popcorn fell on us. It was kind of funny.

^I have the Giant Spider Invasion on dvd and like that cheesy flick. They made the spider out of a VW Beetle car lol. And in some scenes you can see the tracks of the car tires in the grass lol.

Yeah, quite a few pretty cool movies came out of the 1950s.

Remember some of these sci-fi classics?

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
Forbidden Planet (1956)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)

And, of course, these horror classics...

The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) (Hammer)
Horror of Dracula (1958) (Hammer)
The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958) (Hammer)
House on Haunted Hill (1959)
The Mummy (1959) (Hammer)

And, of course, a vintage zombie movie...

Teenage Zombies (1959)

Nice list SG, I have most of those on "dvd horror classics", one of my all time favorite movies is Invasion of the body snatchers. That movie is still scary/creepy as hell. :scare:

My one hope, is that my son will have an appreciation for these classics.

I lent my neighbor kids (17 & 13) the original Exorcist an they returned it and said "eh, it was ok", not that scary.....:doh:Though in fairness the younger one is more into that kinda stuff than the older one. I lend him all my zombie books...

I'm 31 and as far back as I can remember I am almost positive it was Fulci's "Zombi 2". I am sure of one thing, I wasn't even in school yet when I had seen it because I remember my two older sisters coming home from school and scaring me about it the day after we had seen it...and my mom getting after them for doing it

I think my first zombie film that I ever saw had to be either Dawn of the Dead or Zombie when I was in my early teens in the 80's when I rented them.

from what i remember then, it's night of the living dead 1990 that got me hooked into zombie flicks! but for horror i've had lots of favorites from Exorcists series, Fright Night, Dead Alive, Poltergeists, The Lost Boys, Friday the 13th, Halloween and so on...if i were to count the times i've watch NOTLD '90 up to the present i guess i may have it at 40 times more or less..I've had lots of respect & admirations to the masters of horror movie genre for providing some chilling, memorable & sleepless nights to the viewers...
sure i watch other films as well but there's always something in horror films & zombie films in particular thats really special for me. i can't explain what it is...or maybe it's the humor of looking how it was to live the life after death..

my lists of favorite directors / authors of horror includes: george romero, stephen king, john carpenter, hp lovecraft, lucio fulci, brahm stoker, tom savini mong others..

I'm 35 (ouch!) and I used to watch the Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits as a kid. I can't remember the first horror I watched but it was probably something like Halloween or Friday 13th. It helped that when I was in my early teens I befriended a video store guy who used to (illegally) let me rent 18 certificates. He even had copies of the banned (in the UK) Texas Chainsaw Massacre under the counter, which is why I think he was eventually shut down! But it was good while it lasted! :) I was always really into scaring myself with the Romeo films though and they are my biggest inspiration.

I still watch these whenever they are on, usually a new years marathon or something...:)

Do you still have strict bans of R rated movies? That totally sucks if you do. :x

As a kid I used to watch X-files as a kid like younger than 10 and soon it just started loosing its horror touch as I got older so I just started watching any horror movie. I really couldn't watch halloween because my parents were stuck up. I would say I enjoyed watching Army of Darkness as my favorite childhood horror movie and now it would anything gorey as it is just funny when you see someone get torn apart. I still do watch Twilight Zone. When I was a kid and still do. First one ever seen was the Masks. I always was pissed they never removed the old guy wearing the skull mask. THAT would have been cool as hell.

I'm a 43 year old geezer. My parents took me to the drive-in to see The Exorcist. I was 8 or 9. That movie scared the :poo: out of me! Now it seems really cheesy to me.

When I was 13 my friends older brother took us to the drive-in to see Dawn Of The Dead, and I've not been the same since.

I'm 20, The first horror movies I ever saw were House By the Cemetary and Night of the Creeps. My mom bought them for my brother to take to college when I was like 5 and he let me watch them with him before he left... without my mother knowing of course  but then by the age of like 8 i had already seen Halloween, Friday the 13th, Funhouse, and Carnosaur 3... so my mom was like to hell with it, and I pretty much got to watch whatever :)
