View Full Version : Tobe Hooper To Make New Zombie Flick?

From Fangoria (via Bloody-Disgusting.com):

"At the Philadelphia Film Festival for a screening of his new shocker TOOLBOX MURDERS, Tobe Hooper revealed that his next movie will be a zombie opus called MORTUARY. The project will reunite him with TOOLBOX producer Tony Didio and screenwriters Adam Gierasch and Jace Anderson, who scripted TOOLBOX as well as the director's previous CROCODILE. As MORTUARY (which, for the record, has nothing to do with the early-'80s film of the same name featuring Bill Paxton) is going forward, Hooper's BREW project has been put on the back burner for now."

Hrmm....now I'm just wondering if this will be a more 'traditional' zombie flick (ie. flesh-eating hordes) or some alternative spin on the genre.....

Well, thanks for the heads up. I'll keep an eye out and see what I think when I hear more.

what kind of budgets do his movies usually have, I haven't seen anything he has made except TCM, great news though

Its getting to point where I feel like there are too many zombie movies being made, oh well, a zombie backlash in popularity is inevitable, might as well enjoy it while it lasts

I watched Hooper's old Lifeforce movie over the weekend - it was amusing to say the least. Body-jumping vampires from space are literally sucking the life out of everyone they come into contact with - and there were even zombies in it! Maybe they weren't exactly your regular 'garden variety'-type flesh-eating shamblers, but they looked and acted alot like 'em. :D

I love Lifeforce. I think it is a criminally underrated movie, although the rest of Hooper's career hasn't been fantastic (though, from what I read, he seems to have a rough time doing what he wants to do with movies).

I'd be very interested to see what he could do with a zombie movie. I'll be looking out for this one.

Lifeforce is truly a classic. Zombies, space vampires and a nude chick for most of the film (we have bush!). Not bad effects for those days too. I recently got Poltergeist on dvd. Havent seen it for years. Forgot how good it was, though the effects are dated as all hell. Still, Jo-Beth Williams made a cute, feisty and sexy, dope smoking MILF.

Wow. What I remember of Lifeforce was trite at best. I'd get into specifics but the only one I remeber is:

"Each one of those lights is a human soul."

"How do you know?"

"I just... know."

I love the convenience of esp for plot exposition.

What's the last movie that Hooper did? I'm drawing a blank right now.

He has done alot of tv series lately besides the The Toolbox Murders which is coming out. He made Crocodile in 2000 and The Mangler in 1995.

I have yet to see Crocodile or The Mangler.
Are they any good?

Well I haven't seen Crocodile but The Mangler is pretty atrocious. Bad story with an awful role for Robert Englund that just tries to cash in on his 'horror' persona.

Yea, the Mangler was bad. It's one of those horror movies that great genre actors like Englund and Karloff did that makes you go "WTF were they thinking?" :-|

Updated info on this new Mortuary project from one of the scriptwriters:

"It’s not not a zombie movie, but it isn’t a zombie movie in the traditional sense of the word either...There are zombies in it, but it’s based more on the Cthulhu mythos. It’s a Lovecraftian horror tale, based on his writings but not any specific story. It’s about a family whose dad buys a cemetery/mortuary in Arkham, Massachusetts, and spooky hijinx ensue."

Somehow I kinda figured that this wouldn't be a 'traditional' flesh-eater pic. That said, I love Lovecraftian stuff so I'll probably give it a look anyway.

Both films got exceptionally low scores on the IMDB. They are usually tough anyway on horror films, but these scores were pretty bad. :puke:

I'm surprised anyone even took the time to give them a score.

I like Lovecraft, but what is so wrong with a basic zombie movie? Zombies on planes, zombies and monsters from outer space, zombie rock band... does anyone actually wanna see this type of stuff?? How about something mysterious turns the recently dead into flesh eating zombies, these zombies besiege a town/house/major city/army base/whatever, the people inside desperately attempt to survive by any means available. How about that? you can add in satire, underlying human characteristics that can destroy their efforts, a love story or what have you. But how about a straight ahead zombie siege movie?

Look at their efforts as a Public Service Announcement, or a Public Health Warning. :?

The thing is that a basic zombie movie has been done already countless times. I'd rather see new stuff than the same old crap rehashed time and time again.

Amen to new stuff, but I for one enjoy a little rehashing of the classic material.

Well, I like a balance of new and old stuff, too. But to just dismiss one for the other is insane. We need a balance.

No, acting insane has its advantages. Like when you wake up butt-naked in someone's front yard and don't remember how you got there. Um, nevermind. Back on-topic now. :-|
