Lionsgate leaps on 'Conan'
Nu Image to return 'Barbarian' to big screen
From: Variety (http://www.anonym.to/?http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117978859.html?categoryid=13&cs=1&query=Conan)
Nu Image/Millennium Films has made a North American distribution rights deal with Lionsgate for a new film series based on the Robert E. Howard-created character Conan the Barbarian.
The first film will be written by the team of Thomas (http://www.anonym.to/?http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zodInfuser.FillDescriptions%28%27Thomas%27%29 ;) Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer ("Sahara," "Cowboys & Aliens").
Pic will be produced by Lerner, Boaz Davidson, Joe Gatta, Paradox Entertainment's Fredrick Malmberg, George Furla and Henry Winterstern. Trevor Short and Dimbort are exec producers.
Pic is earmarked to begin production later this year, but the start date will depend on the resolution of the writers strike. Nu Image/Millennium chief Avi Lerner confirmed that he is in discussions to make a WGA deal akin to those brokered with United Artists and the Weinstein Co. Such a pact would speed up the process.
"It's a possibility, though I haven't studied it enough to make a final decision," Lerner told Daily Variety (http://www.anonym.to/?http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zodInfuser.FillDescriptions%28%27Daily%20Vari ety%27%29;). "The whole strike is stupid, in my opinion. They approached us, indirectly, to make some kind of deal, and we are looking at it."
Though the original film series dates back far enough that it launched the star of current California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the property maintains a strong brand awareness through ancillary properties that include a Dark Horse comicbook series, a vidgame for Xbox 360 and a Funcom/Eidos multiplayer online role-playing game that was just touted at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
Lionsgate, which has also been rumored to have been courted by the WGA, hasn't commented on its plans. But Nu Image/Millennium founders Lerner and Danny Dimbort are the ones fully financing a film that Lerner anticipates will cost around $100 million. It is by far the most fiscally ambitious film he and Dimbort have undertaken.
Lerner said the Lionsgate deal came out of a strong working relationship developed through the Sylvester Stallone-directed actioner "Rambo," which will be released Jan. 25 by Lionsgate and the Weinstein Co.
"I'm very happy with Jon Feltheimer and his whole team. They understand the business and the value of money better than a lot of studios," Lerner said. "We will finance the movie, but the idea is to work closely with them on a creative level and use their experience."Pic will be produced by Lerner, Boaz Davidson and Joe Gatta, along with Fredrick Malmberg of Paradox Entertainment. Trevor Short, Dimbort and George Furla are exec producers.
Malmberg made a seven-figure deal with Millennium after he declined to renew Warner Bros.' option on the Conan property after seven years. Gatta, who once repped the property as an agent before moving to Millennium as an exec, courted Malmberg for a deal that contains strict progress-to-production provisions.

"Conan" Director Talk Is All Bull
From: Dark Horizons (http://www.anonym.to/?http://www.darkhorizons.com/news08/080212l.php)
The likes of Rob Zombie, Xavier Gens and Neil Marshall have all been linked this past week to directing "Conan", a new film version of the classic barbarian hero that Lionsgate is planning for Summer 2009.
Well all the talk is utter bull according to a reputable and highly placed source within the production. The scooper says: "The bottom line here is that there isn't one. The production companies are talking to a host of directors, there is no completed script and there will be no director until they have a script done."
They add their own warning to those who would spread these rumors - "People like Rob Zombie are planting their own rumors trying to get the job. This is ridiculous." For now, ignore all the talk until later in the year.

Director Brett Ratner circles "Conan" remake
From: Yahoo! (http://www.anonym.to/?http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/news/va/20081109/122628000100.html)
"Rush Hour" director Brett Ratner is in final negotiations to take on literature's most famous barbarian.
Over the past few weeks, Ratner has been considering signing on to direct a 21st century update of "Conan," even as he pushes another high-profile project -- a fourth installment of the "Beverly Hills Cop" franchise -- toward a greenlight at Paramount, where he recently set up shop. The latter film is still likely to go into production first, at Paramount.
Ratner jived to the "Conan" script by "Sahara" duo Joshua Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean Donnelly, who looked to Robert E. Howard's original pulp stories of the 1930s to create their take on the brawny brigand. The writers are doing a quick polish to incorporate some of Ratner's ideas, with an eye toward releasing the film in 2010.
The project is set up at Nu Image/Millennium and Lionsgate, which envision a very R-rated approach in the $85 million budget range.
"The story opens on the battlefield where Conan is born and tells the origin story that sets the stage for what will be the first of multiple films," said Millennium principal Avi Lerner.
Oliver Stone and John Milius wrote the surly fictional thief's first screen incarnation, "Conan the Barbarian," which marked the breakthrough feature for Arnold Schwarzenegger; Milius also directed. A jokier, less blood-and-boob-heavy sequel, "Conan the Destroyer," destroyed the character's franchise chances in 1984 by aiming for a PG-13 rating.
Meanwhile, Paramount -- eyeing the successful fourth-installment resurrections of the "Die Hard" and "Indiana Jones" franchises -- has been gunning to get Detroit's funniest cop back on the streets for a summer 2010 release with Ratner behind the camera. Much-wanted "Wanted" scribes Michael Brandt and Derek Haas have been working on the script so the filmmakers can take advantage of a small scheduling window open for perpetually working star Eddie Murphy.
Ratner most recently directed "Rush Hour 3" and "X-Men: The Last Stand."

X3 sucked badly. I hope Ratner has a better vision for Conan.
I also hope that they return to the original stories.
Robert E. Howard wrote some cool books.

I for one am excited about this, Conan (the 1st one) is one of my all time favorites. Back in the day of the VHS tape, I actually wore it out from watching it so many times. I did the same thing with Aliens also....
:drinking:I hope its good.....:scare:........it had better be good.......:x

Yeah, man, I really loved Conan the Barbarian with Arnold. Even after the badly received Conan 2, I always held out hope for King Conan to be made at some point. I had hoped that Arnold would make King Conan later in his life when he looked like an older warrior the way that he did at the end of Conan the Barbarian.

I've been reading the Conan series that Dark Horse has been putting out, fantastic stuff, they are doing a superb job with it.
For a Conan fix I highly recommend it. :drinking:

Some scoop, I think he'd be good for Conans father.
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Mickey Rourke (http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/contributor/1800010853) is in talks to play Conan's father in "Conan," a resurrection of the fantasy franchise that made Arnold Schwarzenegger (http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/contributor/1800021514) a star.
The Lionsgate project sees barbarian warrior Conan (Jason Momoa) embark on a quest to avenge the slaughter of his people including his father, Corin. Shooting is scheduled to start in Bulgaria in March. Marcus Nispel ("Friday the 13th (http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1800068037/info/)") will direct.

A remake of Conan dosen't sound that bad; however, a film with an original story would be better. Nowadays that concept is almost nonexistant.

I totally agree with you. This is the guy who's going to be Conan. Jason Momoa.

I'm sorry but I worried about a failure here... Sure they're going to throw in some highly graphic violence and plenty of boob, but that doesn't say anything for acting and story...

Here is a map of Conan's world, I take it to be around what would be current day Russia, parts of the middle east, Turkey?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
It's sad that this movie falls victim to a very persistent hollywood trend to do remakes opposed to coming up with new ideas. Personally I'm beyond sick of it.
I was a HUGE Conan fan as a kid, I had comics, I had toys I had games I had it all. This movie is going to have a to live up to a very high standard for myself and a lot of other Conan fans that I know, and with the casting of that.... bean pole as Conan it has already fell short.
Seriously, I'm bigger than that guy.

I always envisioned Conan's world to be where Turkey meets Syria, near where West meets East but a little more East than that?

Jason Momoa is actually more buff now than the picture posted. He was in Stargate Atlantis and he is quite hunky. That aside, I agree he is no Arnold, and will probably not make a good Conan. But I will watch it just the same because he is a good looker and he will be dressed in skimpy outfits. LOL!!! I wish Jared Palakecki (Sam from Supernatural) would have gotten the part instead.

Hopefully it can at least manage to be better than the cartoon..

And it's a prerequisite that the actor to play Conan MUST be enormous. I realize it's hard to compare to Arnold, but surely there's plenty of hugely buff dudes waiting to get acting jobs. Arnold was basically a no-name before Conan.. they should get another no-name, decent, HUGE muscular actor.

Most of the guys that fit in THAT category are in the wrestling profession, and most of them can't act worth a crap.

Well Arnie wasn't exactly Ben Kingsley in Conan either. I'd say I'd rather have a huge muscular dude portraying Conan than than a just-kinda muscular dude, acting be damned. Like I said, I'm sure there's plenty of buff guys with agents and headshots and resumes in Hollywood that would kill to be Conan. Just hold auditions. I mean you're trying to live up to a 7 time Mr. Olympia champion here!
