Hey all,
I started reading The Rising this week at Jury duty (I'd actually gotten the novel as a birthday gift back in February). I'm really enjoying it so far. I've gotten to chapter 6. My question is- do you think this is a zombie novel or an alien possession story? Either way it's good. Just wanted to see what you guys (and Brian) thought.
Thanks- John

I won it on a Message Board somewhere. I have not read it yet either, so let me know what you think when you are done. I am almost done reading Apocolypse End:Reign of the Dead.

Evildead,
The Rising has more story to it than Apocolypse End:Reign of the Dead (Though I really enjoyed both Reign of the Dead books because they were suck quick reads).

Well, even if you're strictly defining zombie as the living dead the book does include them. So I would say it is a zombie and demon possession novel.

UndeadAnthology,
I agree, I feel it's both.

Its interesting that you mentioned that, though. I don't ever recall it being marketed as a demon possession novel and, really, it is at least as much of a demon possession novel as it is a zombie novel. I guess maybe the zombie angle is more fruitful from a marketing standpoint? Maybe demon possession novels aren't that popular?

UndeadAnthology,
To tell the truth, if I knew the story leaned more towards possession than full fledged zombies I would have been very hesitent to even start reading it. Fortunatly I did find out while reading it- it's a really good book. Well written. I'm enjoying it.

yea but didnt the "zombies" killed the people so that there souls left and the others came in. they had access to memories and junk.

so the bodies were in fact dead.. casue they were decaying. and even though they talked, ran shot a gun.. bub still talked alittle and shot and rhodes and hes still considered a member of the undead.

Im thinking its more of a zombie novel.

If you guys are in to demon stuff than read the book DEMONS. its an ok read about demons basicllly getting tired of being the outcast and they come and kill people and are controlled by sleeping humans in cults. There is some zombiific stuff like some town people mindleeslly trying to kill others to feed the demons strenght and junk. I think the authors name is john shirley?

I'd call it a zombie novel, if it really matters.

What I'd rather call it is frigging amazing. I'm a half dozen chapters in, and just absolutely blown away. Brian Keene is the horror writer of the year. Don't **** around with anything else. Pick this one up and read it.

Where's that Brian Keene when you need him? He'd straighten this out.

I have to say, once again, I think it's both. The people in the novel that died are not coming back to life- they're dead. Bringing the bodies back to life are spirits or demons. And that's what make this a zombie- possesion.

Read it before I scoop your brains out of your skull and feed them to my zombie dog, Linda.

It's hard to say. I think it's more of a demonic influence. I love the story and can't wait for part 2!

I wasn't going to weigh in, because I've really been enjoying your thoughts. But since Go-Go asked:

I think it's both. The Siqqusim are certainly demons, but demons that can only possess the dead, thus, creating zombies.

In writing the book, I was going for an Evil Dead style corpse, set in a post-apocalyptic Romero-style world.
