The wildly popular table-top boardgame 'Zombies!!' from Twilight Creations could be getting a digital make-over and make an appearance on Xbox Live Arcade.

The game has not yet been officially announced, but sources close to Twilight claim that the game is well underway. The popular gaming site Joystiq posed the question to Twilight Creations' Todd A. Breitenstein at Comic-Con this past weekend and was told "I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of such a project... but do you think it would be cool?"

I really hope this happens. I think board games over XBL is an untapped market. Not only family classics like Monopoly and Risk, but also less widely known games that are just as popular none the less. Games like Talisman (was supposed to be made but seems to be dead now) and Zombies!!.

Playing a board game like this has all sort of advantages. Not only do you not have to spend your time on setting/packing up, but you don't have to worry about having enough table space. Plus actions are automated to keep the flow AND you can play with your friends without having to invite them out (which would be good for those that friends that don't live in the same city).

Many of these games have expansions which is perfect for extra downloads in the future and all the rules have already been established. I mean it's a recipe for printing money.

I think the big problem with computer/console board games is AI. In the end, what makes most board games great is the human imagination. Whether it's strategy, making an unpredictable (or irrational) move, just plain cheating (see the Steve Jackson game Illuminati), making of house rules (Monopoly) teaming up against someone (Risk), or just the interactions during the game, board games tend to only be as fun as the group your playing with. Computer A.I. can only go so far to match wits with a human player. And playing over the internet tends to lose some of the fun of interacting first hand, and of course players are limited by the game engine.

With that being said, I'm all in favor of more XBL or stand-alone computer board games. I love my Star Wars Monopoly, Axis & Allies, Scrabble and all. Zombies!!! is the perfect game for XBL. It is too cumbersome to play solo, but easy enough for the computer A.I. to handle simple logistics (especially zombie movement). Unfortunately, I haven't seen anything else to suggest anyone is actually working on the title.

Right now, I'm awaiting the next computer version of Blood Bowl coming Q1 of 2009, which is going to be a true to rules board game along with the RTS modes. So, I see no reason why someone couldn't work on a nice Zombies!!! XBL game which would be cheaper and easier to implement than a full fledged, multi-platform, commercial release.

Sounds cool but then again not many computer/boardgame games are ever that good :-(

Cool! Thanks for sharing. Although with "Big Rooster" behind it that seems to dash any of my hopes that Talisman would actually be finished. :-(
