The only realistic cause of a zombie-like virus is a disease, and many modern pandemic threats are airborne. Anyone know of a breathing mask that isn't too expensive and can be upkept easily? Most masks use cartridges that have to be replaced, which is useless if it has to be used indefinitely.

•Flexible,1-piece polyurethane lens with wide field of vision is bonded to durable Hycar ™rubber facepiece
•Dual-canister mount (bayonet mount)allows weapon sighting from either shoulder
•Fully elastic,6-point head harness promotes easy on-off,easy adjustment, no hair pulling
•Standard nosecup helps eliminate lens fogging
•Standard mechanical speaking diaphragm included
•NIOSH-approved (No.TC-14G-0235)for protection against chloroacetophenone (CN),chlorobenzylidene (CS),P100 particulate efficiency level,and particulates
It provides protection against CN, CS and OC chemicals, features an anti-fog applique to eliminate fog, and comes from Federal Laboratories, a name you can trust! At 40% lighter than our other masks, the comfortable, flexible face piece is of high car rubber construction. It features a molded nose cup for a better, more comfortable seal, and a 6-point adjustable nylon head harness. Cannisters fit on either side to accomodate right or left handed shooters. It has bayonet cannister fasteners for easy on/off. You can wear two cannisters for extra protection. Black. One size fits most. Weighs 1.6 lbs. Includes one cartridge.
This Chemical-Biological Mask is effective against biological agents and these chemical warfare(CW) agents: GA, GB (Sarin), GD, VX, Mustard, and Lewisite. Testing conducted by MSA and independent laboratories assures that the gas mask and canister meet the requirements for effectiveness against CW agents using the test protocol recommended by the Chemical Agent Safety and Health Policy Action Committee (CASHPAC). They are also effective against OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) Riot Control Agent and HCN ( Hydrogen Cyanide), but, have not been tested or approved by NOISH for these applications.
I recon this mask will be ok, but you will need canisters & they do have expiry dates. You might as well get the nbc suit, but if you have to walk around in that stuff, it ain't gonna be fun. I have never heard of masks without some form of canister, you could just walk around with a diving aqualung on your back.

I have a couple from the army surplus store and I'm sure the canisters are expired. You pretty much have to have a canister for a gas mask. Its kinda like a filter for your kitchen sink. If you don't replace it after it expires, you're just drinking tap water again.

I think it would be to late for a mask to prevent becoming a carrier of the Zed bug. If its airborne then everyone would probably be carrying it.
I would think i would want to wear one in the event of zed blood splatter. Also, eye protection. I'm think 28 days/weeks later here.

theres an upside to the gas mask that you might not have thought about:
if you were wearing one and re-amnimated you as a G wouldnt be able to bite some one!
this is why i will wear a gasmask/umpires mask in the event of Z-day
in case i go zed, at least i can't infect others via bites!

"At what level do these masks filter the air?"
Well you could always get a Scott Air Pack or wear a scuba tank.
Wonder if a respirator like the guys who paint cars would work?

You could build a device that uses ultraviolet light to sterilize the air coming into the mask instead of a particle filter. If it used LEDs to produce the light it would be relatively efficient. Hook a rechargeable power pack up to it, and then hook the power pack up to the type of solar panel bank that you find on those back-packs and you just might have something that would work.

There's always those roller cart thingies you see the old folks using with their02 tanks.
The standard military type mask won't do a thing against an airborn bug like the flu or even the common cold. I doubt they'd be effective against something as deadly as a zed virus.
