Saw an early show of Silent Hill. Awesome in my opinion. Fans of the first Silent Hill game definitely need to check it out... The 'demons' kicked ass, along with the atmosphere, music and sound fx. In my opinion, one of the best 'video game' movies ever made (but look at the competition?), let alone a superb horror film. Really enjoyed it since it didn't go soft. Will buy the DVD.;-)

Holy bejesus. This movie was unbelievably awesome. For any fans of horror, scary, or dark and different movies, GO SEE THIS!
Of course it is based off a video game, but this is officially the only good movie based game there is. Hands down, no other movie has got it this right.
If you're a fan of the games, you're basically gonna cream your pants. It is VERY faithful to the story and has an excellent plot (not just premise, the whole story is good). It re-creates the settings with unbelievable accuracy.
Even if you haven't played the games, this movie is still a very good horror/scary movie. It won't make as much sense, but they explain everything in detail as to why what's happening. Things like the fog and certain creatures won't make you smile to yourself when you finally see them on the big screen, but you will still enjoy them.
And the music is absolutely amazing. Absolutely amazing. They took music from the games and had the same composer work on it. It is so un-Hollywood. The sounds will draw you in so unbelievably well. It's what made the games so great in the first place. It wasn't what you saw, but what you could hear.
I urge everyone to go see this movie. Yes, it is way too scary for kids and is a pretty hard R rating. But us adults love good scary movies, not this bull "When a Stranger Calls" crap Hollywood has been doing. This will make you gross out and will make you jump, and maybe even have you thinking wierd thoughts as you walk down your hallway in the dark at night when you go home. Overall, it's such a well made geniune piece of art. It's dark, gritty, scary, and original (well, the game was).
I really can't put my thoughts into good words because I'm so worked up right now. I'm seeing it again tonite. That's right, twice in one day.

Great movie. As a stand alone movie it was awesome. You don't need to play the video games to watch it at all. Pyramid Head was a tough mean S.O.B. and the monster nurses are creepy. Oh, and Cybil was smokin' in that tight leather policewoman outfit. The whole movie was grimy with all the rust, dirt, and blood.
Now for us video game buffs, here's the only downsides to the movie. Rehashing 75% of the movie soundtrack from Silent Hill 2, not enough monsters (1 walking meat bag, 1 pyramid head and a handful of killer kids and mutated nurses), monster behavior different from how they act in the game (monsters dormant with no light), and bullets are not laying around in the streets or on park benches... how dare they leave that out. It's mainly based off of Silent Hill 1 only with nods to 2 & 3 but faithful to the games for what's there but there was no haunted hospital... poopy.
And now the two biggest complaints we'll see so I'll just go ahead and mention them: Too much CGI (but staple nowadays) and the ending makes you go "What the hell?"
But, I'll be buying the unrated version directors cut when it hits DVD for sure. Best video game to big screen conversion that I've seen. Totally dug it. Put aside your previous fears of video game to big screen movies and go watch this flick! You won't be disappointed.

The visuals alone make this movie worth seeing. The demons/creatures were absolutely amazing and I will be seeing this movie a few more times. The scene near the end that I will call the "revenge" scene was fantastic.

Got back last night, but was too tired to post. Anyway, it was a really good movie with an excellent build up, but much in the vein of Wolf Creek, it failed to deliver in the end. Just my two cents. I still enjoyed it though.

Since I generally knew what to expect when it comes to the monsters and story, the film didn't scare me, but was effective as a horror film nonetheless.
Silent Hill the movie is definitely a great exploration/horror film, slow paced, but very captivating, and as said, a very faithful(to the games) adaptation.:)

..I seem to to be the only one here that hated this movie.
In my opinion, it sucked. Instead of harry mason, we get one of the most cliche heroines in horror, The excessive use of CGI made me want to close my eyes every time the sirens blared. The subplot with the fanatics in the church was horrid. Granted, this probably is the best translation from Game to movie ever, and the pyramid head kicked an unearthly amount of ass, not even these thing could save this movie. It seemed to flash from the silent hill world I know, to an over used horror cliche.
Fanboy note: What ever happened with the subplot about the drugs?

Truly the best video game adaption movie ever. This took everything the game had and multiplied it times 10. Everything about it was just superb, the acting, the atmosphere, the special effects, EVERYTHING!!! Oh and just a little side note for anyone who's not a fan of the games, the music is taken from most of the Silent Hill games so if there's a song from there's a good chance it'll be on the soundtrack for one of the games.

I was blown the **** away. Best movie I've seen in a long, LONG time. Agreed. I must say that this is "THE" best game to movie adaptation "EVER". 9.5/10
My cousin really didn't understand the ending, I tried to explain what I thought happened though. I think thatRose and Sharon were still trapped in the alternate, gray world. Like in the earlier part of the film when Chris and Officer Gucci were looking for them.

Two hours is way too long for a story that goes absolutely nowhere. The visuals were great and all, but it was like watching a children's television show the way the story was told and the pacing of the film. I'm sure most five year olds could understand what was going on (although I doubt anyone would want there five year old to see this movie). Also, the whole feel of the movie was like I went over to my friends house and watched him play a really cool looking game for two hours, but never once getting a chance to play. That's not a movie, that's a really long and drawn out cut scene.
I was expecting too much from this movie.

I thought the siren was scary as hell. The mosters were cool. Like the ones in the beginning that looked like charred children and the faceless things when they were out by the car again. But what in the world was the giant with the huge metal cage over his head?

I thought it was a pretty weak movie. The CGI creatures and other-worldy effects were pretty cheesy and cheap. I didn't like the pacing of the story due to it seeming like a video game. One of those games where you find a little clue then go to the next clue, and so on. The atmosphere was good and the darkness parts were cool but lost their cool factor half way through the second time. The big dude with the cage on his head is Pyramid Head. He deals with all things having to do with rape and murder.

I saw it last night, and as a fan of the SH series, I was thoroughly impressed. This movie by far is the best adaptaion from game to movie ive seen...the atmoshpere and monsters were captured PERFECTLY. most notably the Pyramid head, the thing ruled! I thought the subplot with the fanatics was well placed and the overall story; although not 100% faithfull to the original was excellent....9/10 for me! this will definetly be linning my dvd shelves...:)

I thought it was pretty damn cool. The story line sort of lost steam in the second hlaf, but after playing through every game at least 3 or 4 times I'm bound to see differences. I thought it was pretty awsome, I could have done with less about the cult though...
Watched it last night. Although it was not as good as i had hoped it was still a damn fine movie.

yeah, the ending was kind of weird. it seemed that rose knew nothing was right, but she accepted that in some way. how could you not notice the ever-present fog, or why she simply drove towards what looked like an open chasm? she must have known.
iv heard that the characters all died when they crashed, but im nto sure about if it is true.
this movie was definately superb, i love the guy in the end who gets completely covered in barbed wire and SQUISH gets all mushed up, and the janitor was bad ass.
was the janitor supposed to be the father of sharron? they dont really say but it is implied.

As well you should! SH 1 and 2 are phenomenal- 4 was never intended to be part of the SH series and betrays that by it being the worst of the four. Anyway, the film was certainly an ode to the fans of the games.

The CGI gore was excessive and looked pretty cheesy mixed in with the bad effects too. I wish they wouldn't use the CG gore as much until it's finely tuned. The best uses of it are in tandem with the physical effects and makeup. I also hated how straight forward the storyline was. Things would happen and then they'd spend time explaining them with poor dialogue and when they were through it was never anything you couldn't pick up by paying attenion. Which I found hard to do.

I never really played the games, I got a short way into SH3 or 4(you start the game in a public toilet) but couldn't really get into it. That being said I was still pretty impressed with the film, I absolutely loved the fog clouded streets (one of the few things I remember from the game), they did a great job of creating a 'dead town'. I thought the use if sound was excellent as well. The Janitor was a great monster and after seeing the much praised Pyramid Head in action I may have to go out and track down the games. Also its always nice to see a big budget flick that isn't afraid to show a bit of good ol' fashioned gore. Definatley the best game to movie conversion. One thing though, was Sean Bean trying to do an american accent? He didn't sound like himself for the most part, but kept occasionaly slipping back to his normal voice.

Very good movie. The soundtrack couldn't have been done better. Silent Hill was certainly one of the most graphic, ghastly movies i've ever seen yet briliantly executed. At times it even felt like you were living the computer game. Only Doom has accomplished that previosly.
To a guy like me who has not played the games several events really seemed random and unexplained even after the ending(knock on wood) put a bit of perspective into previous strange and horrific happenings. I'd give it 4/5 stars.

What I like best about the movie is that it answered the questions left unanswered in the first game. (I haven't played the sequels) And I have grown to appreciate any game-to-film movie that doesn't deviate too much from the source.
I am grateful that despite this being a horror film, it did not go overboard with CGI, stunts, explosions and pre-release hype like other non-horror movies I could mention.
That said, if you haven't played the game, it comes out as pretty average.
I would like to see it on the small screen, though. There seemed to be too much going on iat a time for my eyes to absorb.

My review consists of 2 words..."Silent Load". Okay, more than 2 words. I don't think they put a whole lot of effort into writing a script. It was like they all had the pitch meeting and someone took some notes about what worked for the game on a napkin. I can only assume that once they got the financing and staffing issues worked out, they built some sets. Then everyone showed up and said, "Okay, so lets take a look at the script" but all they had was the ketchup stained napkin. Someone should have stopped things then, but they had opened a Pandora's box of steaming crap.

I suppose my frustration comes form this...I have seen so many movies lately that "look" good. Great effects, awesome sets, etc. the only thing lacking is a G.D. story. I will admit, the look of the movie was awesome, as were all of the effects, but to be honest the only thing that scared me, or even made me hold my breath during the whole thing was when she accidently knocked into the garbage can sometime within the first 10 minutes. What the hell, they had a great oppritunity to scare the crap out of you for almost two hours and that was the worst of it. An age old, tried and true sound effect. So you will forgive me if I rant, I'm am so tired of movies like these, I paid nine bucks for it and I didn't even get a reach around. It was more like two hours of dry prison rape....

The excessive use of CGI? What I hear, the only CGI sequence was the roach attack. The rest was animatronics or make-up. That's why I liked it. Not the usual CGI/wire-stunt fest you get nowadays.

I enjoyed the first SH game a lot, which the movie is mostly based on. The foggy atmosphere is really well done, but I could imagine a few more monsters in the distance, barely perceptible through the fog, slowly moving closer. Needed more monsters/demons, but I liked it, despite the slow story. Scary? No.

i have never played any of the games but i saw it anyway. i thought it was good. better than Land of the feel-sorry-4-us Dead, but not quite perfect. i dont want to spoil anything but i have a few questions because i am confused on a couple points. except for the actual time setting and characters, is the background story about the town itself the same(ie what happened before the game/movie takes place)? i never played the games so i was wondering. i dont suppose the game ever signaled the emergence of demons with an air raid siren, did it?
and imo the demons (nurses, children, and the first staggering monster they see) were pretty freaky. i always thought it was supposed to be zombies but i guess not??
my second question is: what the hell was going on at the end?? were they dead or in hell or something??

Better than Land??? I don't think so, but I did really enjoy this movie though. Of course there were times were you find yourself wondering how they are going to mess up the film. As to answer some of your questions.
1. The movie is loosly based on the 1st and 2nd game with some key differences.
2. As for the air raid siren, it doesn't really signal when the monsters are near... well it kinda does I guess. When the siren goes off the whole world shifts into another plane of exsistance where everything bad and rotten can happen, you know, all the deamons and whatnot come out to play. In the game this happens as well but when monsters come near your radio flips out and goes all staticy, this kinda happens in the movie too.
3. Nope not zombies, just messed up creepy things of all sorts and sizes.
4. Now the ending was weird for me too but this is what I think. I am pretty sure they were in a sort of purgatory which they made into their own hell. The little girl owned this place as either god/devil and the main character somehow crossed into this world.

i have never played any of the games but i saw it anyway. i thought it was good. better than Land of the feel-sorry-4-us Dead, but not quite perfect. i dont want to spoil anything but i have a few questions because i am confused on a couple points. except for the actual time setting and characters, is the background story about the town itself the same(ie what happened before the game/movie takes place)? i never played the games so i was wondering. i dont suppose the game ever signaled the emergence of demons with an air raid siren, did it?
and imo the demons (nurses, children, and the first staggering monster they see) were pretty freaky. i always thought it was supposed to be zombies but i guess not??
my second question is: what the hell was going on at the end?? were they dead or in hell or something??

I have just recently seen this movie and liked it. Because of this film I went out and bought the Silent Hill game and played it. There were parts (the game)that made me jump!
