Yeah, i could have bought the winter gear at the mall, but man those customs guys at MSP, they must have been expecting some big drug shipment, they really gave us a grilling, strange they never do that when the vip is with us:loon:

Mall of America? People live inside the mall. I don't think it would be very easy to keep locked up. There are tons of entrances for looters to break their way in. Sure it has a indoor roller coaster and plenty of food stockpiled, but really it wouldn't provide a very good shelter for long. But if you just loot it and then jet, then it would be quite beneficial.
This thread is very similar to this thread (http://allthingszombie.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15545) btw.

"Yes, it's close. But it's bit more specified, in it is referring to one particular giant mall."
"And it will stay separate as long as the topic stays on target." ;-)

thanks darkness! your my hero :)
it has tons of stuff there...and i only counted 6 entrances from looking at it with google maps and street views and stuff... 4 of the entrances are from car garages and are on the 2nd or 3rd floor and since those entrances are in parking garages you can just park a car in front of the door or something...you can let down the security gate things and block off sections of the mall..i think the possabilities are endless
sure it would be time consuming to take care of the place but you can fit so many survivors and support so many people

It would be difficult, but not impossible if most of the people inside pulled together & worked their @sses off i think it could be done, i do however aggree it would be a sitting target, but if the survivors inside got to know the place inside out, the could build a sort of panic room to hide in.

haha i dont think 1 panic room could fit all those people...more like panic rooms haha
im sure alot of people would freak out and leave the mall or something..even after its all barracaded up and safe...people will want out thats why you would have to section off the areas with the roll cages that way if one area is messed up the others wont be...and block up the stars and stuff..only a few elevators will work that way zeds cant go up the stairs

Also there would i'm sure be an underground escape route ( cable tunnel, sewage pipe etc ) if the mall became overrun. I also think in a disaster scenario people do pull together, of course a few will want to go against the flow but you might talk them round, or just give them the supplies they want & say bye bye.

I don't know if I'd want to stick it out at the mall. I mean even if you had a crack team of survivors working their butts off to secure the place, the mall is still too huge to monitor all the time. It would seem like an obvious target for looters, and other survivors looking for shelter. This would just cause more zombies to converge on the mall. Sorry, it just seems too risky to me.
I would definitely go to the mall for supplies though. The wide selection of stores there make hitting it up for supplies too hard to resist.

Hmm, even if just a section of the mall was sealed off this would be sufficient due to the sheer size of the mall of america. Just popping in for supplies would imo be more dangerous.

Sure popping in for supplies would be dangerous, but that danger would exist anywhere you went to "restock".
I'm sure that a section of the mall could be secured, but there is still a matter of being holed up in a place that would look very tempting to looting bands of thugs who would stop at nothing to get what they wanted. If they needed to compromise the "safe-zone" that a band of survivors had secured, they'd do it in a heartbeat and not think twice about endangering innocent lives if it meant getting what they wanted.
I'm sure it would be difficult to find a "safe place" but one that looks appealing to many wouldn't remain safe for long IMO.

When i say safe zone, i mean it would not be an obvious area that survivors would be holed up in, maybe a childrens clothing store, trash the store, make it look like there is nothing of value left. Then build a partition from stocks from the other stores. Once the band of thugs are spotted, it's lockdown. When they have gone you can make the decision to stay or leave.
I also doubt whether thugs will stay long or want to fight it out with well armed survivors.

Good point. I'm not knocking your idea here, I'm just trying to see it from another angle. :) I just read The Pheonix Gene and the thugs in that book were harsh. Trashing everywhere they'd go just so that there would be nothing of worth left behind for any other survivors that may come by. Not to mention that they were pretty well armed (and not the kind to take "no" for an answer either). I just think that in that situation, I would not want to underestimate anyone, because we'd all be pretty desperate and capable of anything and everything.

Yep, you're right the raiders in The Pheonix Gene were the worst kind, however i don't recall them looking in places that looked trashed already, they just went to easy targets. Here's looking forward to the tv show of the above mentioned book. ( take the money Terry, please )
