So far Ive loved both Dog Soldiers and The Descent. Neil Marshall is one of those new directors thats hitting gold with me.

Doomsday is about a virus that takes out Ireland so the English government walls up the country leaving the Irish to die with the infection. The problem is the virus pops up in the heart of London so they send in a platoon of soldiers and a few docs to find the "cure".

I know "infection" plots have been done to death lately but this film breaths a new life into them. It borrows a few ideas from Road Warrior as well as Escape from New York but manages to put some of its own into the mix.

Story: There's never really a lull in the action for more then 10 minutes or so. The plot moves along at a steady sometimes sprinting pace and is mixed in with some random boobies and lots of gore.

Violence: In every action scene there were at least 3 gore shots. We get bodies ran over by tanks, heads blown off, throats slit, nails into heads... full of good stuff. Also some crispy critters.

Acting: I really dug the "survivors" of this flick. Apparently the punk and medieval looks are the only fashinos that survive being locked up for 30 years. The hotty Rhona Mitra plays the girly badass well.. really no bad acting in this one. Oh and is Mcdowell's trademark voiceovers now?

Downers: For me the worst part of the film was the score. I dont feel like listeing to a heavy gutair when people are simply just talking, very distracting at some points. which sucks becasue the guy that did the 300 score did this.. tyler bates I think. Another downer was the lack of soldier's story. When we are introduced to them I got the feel of the Aliens marine thing, but then some of them are written off without another look. Theres a certain vehicle in the road warror scene that seems to take crashing quite well... ughers. I felt the ending could have been stronger but it was new.

All in all its a fun movie. Great violence and a plot that doesnt have too many WTF moments. It has a steady pace that lags in no places. Had a well rounded cast and had NO CGI BLOOD!!!! at least as far as I could tell. If your a fan of apoco movies and the mad max/escape from new york series then you'll dig this.

Dog Soldiers 8/10
The Descent 9/10

Doomsday 7.5/10

I saw this today as part of a theater check and didn't like it at all. Lots of good actors giving believable performances but just not convincing. 2 quiet apc's can roll into Glasgow and be ambushed right away but a locomotive can pull into the train station and stay hidden???? Then it can be used as a getaway vehicle from a dead cold stop?

You would think after 30+ years that these folks would be competent with their weapons. Where did the Glaswegians get so much gasoline that they could throw it around? It was obviously very expensive though.

silly and juvenile.

BTW, it was Scotland not Ireland, Ireland is a separate island and doesn't need a fence Even a 30 foot, many miles [80 some odd iirc] instant fence. Hmmmmmm virus shows up in Glasgow and infects most of the nation........then the brits can build a 80 mile giant fence complete with obstacles and minefields..........sure......right.....that's the ticket. I believe that people and viruses can travel faster than that. Maybe on a train?

I agree I went into this movie expecting complete and total reality, suspension of disbelief be damned !!!

actualy I thought this movie was really good, , not perfect but an enjoyable flick and a good way to waste a little time, as for inacuracies,,,, this movie was about as realistic as id expect a movie like this to be , which is to say not very but still who wants to pay 10 bucks a ticket to watch reality, if i wanted that id watch the news.

I would recomend this movie to fans of films like mad max or escape from new york type of movies, hell in many ways i thought this was a better sequel to escape from new york then escape from LA was haha.

8 / 10 for me.

i agree about the problems. I had to let them go to enjoy the movie. A car still being able to run after 30 years in a box? lol.

As for the Ireland part.. I rememberd making that mistake but forgot to edit! now I look like a fool!:x:)

I loved the movie personally. I read in Fangoria that the director had a very generous budget, allowing for all the nice real stuff and not a bunch of CGI.

********SPOILERS******* maybe?

I agree though with the problems of the film....I mean come on, there's no way the government can build a wall around an entire country fast enough to keep a highly contagious virus from getting over the other side. That's just not going to happen.

*****spoilers off******** maybe?

Wasn't that car a Bentley? Either way it was a sweet car. Wouldn't the tires go flat after 30 years?

It was a great movie I must say. I may not know much, but I know what I like. And that was one of my favorite movies so far this year. :drinking:

I thought the wall was built not to contain the virus itself but to keep the scots from flooding into England, bring the virus with them that hadnt come up there yet.

Oh man, this is classic! Check out Neil Marshall's Doomsday reenacted with Legos! The film, which hit theaters this past March, is set three decades after a lethal virus tore through a major country, leading to the country's walling off. When the virus, known as the Reaper, resurfaces in another country, an elite group is dispatched to the infected country to find a cure. There, they end up shut off from the rest of the world and must battle through a landscape that has become a waking nightmare.

They would only have to build it across the thinnest connecting stretch of land between Scotland and England. It's not like quarantining Canada - we're a small island with a big military - I think it could be done. It's by far not the worst gap in logic in this movie, although I loved it as a crazy popcorn flick with some interesting ideas.

The best part was seeing Glasgow, where I live, as a post-apocalyptic wasteland. I enjoyed spotting locations I recognized and now I know how it's going to look when the zombies come!

Doomsday had a good viral plot. They should have ran with that! Instead...we gotta really, really, really cheesy version of Mad Max in King Arthur's court.

I enjoyed it, but was expecting more.

I just watched it, it was ok, i would definatly agree it took the visuals of Mad Max 2/Escape from NY but not the sense of devastation. The medieval part was well completely lame. Definatly a bit of a stretch there. I did dig the fact that they made the vehicles and all of the weapons. I got the feeling that the makers of the film are hoping that it will gain a cult following allowing them to make another, since they had the Major Eden character go back to the Marauders at the end of the movie as if to claim that she is the new ruler. hmm a female version of MAD MAX/Snake Plisken. Although she does lack the internal drive for isolation that Mad Max has or the anonymity of Snake.

this movie was ok if you have some time to waste. As for 30 years in the future I live in the east end of Glasgow and some of it looks like that now! And also for fencing Scotland off from England the Romans did that a long time ago with Hadrians wall.

Neil Marshall is a God as far as I am concerned. This fell a little short, however, but was a pretty good homage to 80's action flicks. I do love Rhona Mitra in anything...

I watched this dvd the other night finally and really thought it was good. It had alot of the elements from films like Escape from New York, Mad Max, No Escape, etc......in it. The kills or say gore was well done in it and so was the acting and characters.

Rhona Mitra wants to practice making babies with me........No, I don't want a kid but she wants me to just practice making them with her lol.:drinking:

I thought it was allright. It kind of lost me when then went back to the King Arthur days. I thought it could of been better if they would of stuck to the deserted city.

It's like a 80's throwback. Something John Carpenter would've directed in 1987. I enjoyed it.

Rhona Mitra is hot as hell, too.
