Put your thoughts here, is metal really a evil music? Is (put band's name here) metal? How has metal started? This is the place for that. :)

Hell yes, I watched it relgiously every night, Infact I went so far to even record several to VHS, i got a box of em around here somewhere, I might have to dig them out.
I been to 9 ozzy concerts combing all the actualy ozzy tours and ozzfests, and probaly, 5 or so BLS shows also counting ozzfests.

Wasnt Black Sabbath considered acid rock back in the day?
Dead Jack
02-01-2008, 03:21 AM
Some people may have called it like this, but most called it Stoner Rock because most of Sabbath's fans liked to smoke weed.
It's actually Early Metal, the first true metal band in history. They were supposed to make a blues band but they changed name two times before doing some metal.

I used to live by the Headbanger's Ball as well! I didn't really like that uber-dork Adam "The Blade" Curry. Where the f**k did they find him? Just because he was Tim Curry's son was no reason to give him a job! Anyway, as for my concert list....If I can remember them all....
Metallica - 4 times. ALL of which were the tours for the first 4 albums before they began sucking.
Kiss - 2 times
Flotsam & Jetsam - WITH Jason Newsted
Dog Eat Dog
Biohazard
King Diamond
ACDC
White Lion
Kix
Ozzy - 2 times
Anthrax
Cinderella
I'm certain there are several more, buy my memory isn't working so good when I try to ponder back to the 80's for some reason!

Like with all the music I listen to, I have to be in a mood for a "metal" but dear god I dont think I even know what it is anymore.
The music genres are so blurred these days, but there are always those who want to label every single type of differnece in the music, metal in this case.
I mean, Thrash, Nu Metal, Power Metal, Speed Metal.....:x
Who cares? Whatever happened to just listening to what ****in rocks awesome?:drinking:
My 2 cents is worth 1,000 pecos, remember that.

I love a lot of the older metal bands, but I wouldn't call myself a "Hardcore Rocker" like some of the others here. I've never been to a rock concert, but that's only because my favorite bands have either broken up while I was in diapers, lost an important band member to death, or never had a reunion show near where I live. Out of all the metal genres and bands out there, the ones I like the most are KISS, AC/DC, Metallica, and Ozzy. I also like some of the glam bands from the 80s like Poison and Twisted Sister, but I'm not sure if they're considered metal to some of the metal freaks here.
Dead Jack
02-02-2008, 01:09 AM
Yeah those bands are Glam Metal. Sam Dunn consider stuff like Limp Bizkit being metal, Nu-Metal. I sincerely hope the guy don't listen to shit like that. XD
I think that metal categories is not a bad thing. You can't put power metal bands in the same category as trash bands, except in metal. These categories is simply to learn the differences in sound between bands. I think Sam Dunn has made a good job in helping ignorant people to learn more about metal, because that was the reason for making a chart: So people can learn more about metal, especially people who seldom listen to metal.
If you ask me, I think Sam Dunn is one of the most metal people on Earth. :P

sounds to me like hes a metal / book worm ( or nerd ) hybrid
I can see calling limp bizkit new metal, though ive always thought of them as rap rock.
Dead Jack
02-02-2008, 01:44 AM
Yeah there are some rap-metal bands, I think these are the Nu-Metal bands.
Just listen to Linkin' Park's in the end, it's rap vocals over weak metal music.....
Samd Dunn doesn't look like a nerd. I guess it's a simple headbanger who wanted to learn history of metal and understand what makes every metal genres different. Seriously, every metalhead should watch Metal: A Headbanger's Journey. Can't wait for his next stuff, which will focus on the underground scene. ^^

being a nerd isnt about how you look , being a nerd isnt actualy a bad thing, at least not IMO, im definatly a video game nerd, hell most of the folks around here could be considered nerds as gung ho as most are on zombies.
I actualy rather dislike limp bizkit, Ironicly the one song I like by them Is the one that if you knew me and my musical taste would assueme is the one song I hate,,, N2gether now, dont ask me why, but i love that song :drinking:

You a gamer? Welcome to the club! :drinking:
Never liked Limp Bizkit. I don't know why Sam Dunn even consider these kinda bands as being metal. He probably put them in the chart only to make it complete 'cuz I don't think a pure metalhead would actually consider Linkin' Park being an important part of the metal history.

I prefer retro gaming my self, NES, SNES, genesis , ps1, N64, the current stuff is great dont get me wrong, im just of the mind that the best days are behind us in the world of video games, I think it will take alot to rival how insanely huge , and awesome NES was in the 80's.
then again as i said earlier, I think im stuck in the 80's and 90's

Don't worry, I agree with you. Some older games weren't the same when sequels were made. Like Mario, I liked most games that were made since Super Mario Bros. In my opinion, SMB was the best Mario game, though I liked other games, like SM 64 and Mario Party.
Great hits such as Donkey Kong are quite rare these days. Sure, there are the occasional series that simply blow the player away (The Elder Scrolls, Metal Gear Solid, GTA). Other series just keep being different than it was (Can hardly see a difference between Final Fantasy XI and XII).
Anyway, that's not the point of the thread.

music, video games, TV , will always be a scapegoat for all the violence and bullshit that goes on in this country, for some reason people cant just grasp the concept that some people are ****ed up, and are going to do ****ed up things, I dont think playing doom while listening to judas priest is going to make it anymore likely you'll go out and kill someone, if your far enough gone to do something like that, your going to do it anyways, there may be a handful of legit cases where someone heard a certain song or saw something on TV and they went out and did it, but again, they would have to have some wires crossed to begin with.
Id be willing to bet the number of sane, well grounded in reality, non depressed people who hear a song or see something on TV, and go out and break some sort of law or kill them selfs based solely on what they heard / saw can be counted on one hand.

I agree, you can not blame music for actions you choose to take, heres a bit i found on wikipedia about it, the guys were both drunk, that right there should tell you something.
In summer 1990, the band was involved in a civil action that alleged they were responsible for the suicide attempts in 1985 of 20-year old James Vance and 19-year old Ray Belknap in Reno, Nevada, USA.[12] On December 23, 1985 Vance and Belknap got intoxicated then went to a playground at a Lutheran church in Reno. Belknap shot a 12 gauge shotgun under his chin, dying instantly, and Vance followed, but survived with a severely disfigured face. He died three years later after a suicidal overdose of painkillers.[13]
The men's parents and their legal team alleged that a subliminal message of "do it" had been included in the Judas Priest song "Better By You, Better Than Me" from the Stained Class album (actually a cover of a Spooky Tooth number). They alleged the command in the song triggered the suicide attempt.[12] The suit was eventually dismissed.[12] One of the defense witnesses, Dr Timothy E. Moore, wrote an article for Skeptical Inquirer chronicling the trial.[12]
The trial was covered in the 1991 documentary Dream Deceivers: The Story Behind James Vance Vs. Judas Priest. In the documentary Halford commented that, if they wanted to insert subliminal commands in their music, killing their fans would be counterproductive and they would prefer to insert the command "Buy more of our records". Regarding the prosecution's assertions that the statement "do it" was a command to commit suicide, Halford pointed out "do it" had no direct message.

I like Abigail II as well, but nowhere near as much as the first one. Alot of "purists" will tell you that King was much better back in the Mercyful Fate days, but I disagree. That band just held him back. If he would've stayed with them we would've never had masterpieces such as Abigail. This is way outside the metal chat, but you and TBD have some damn fine bands up there in your area as well! Have you gotten a chance to see The Tossers when they played locally?

1-Blizzard of Ozz- Ozzy Osbourne
2- Bark at the Moon- Ozzy Osbourne
3-Nightfall in Middle-Earth- Blind Guardian

5-Symphony from Enchanted Lands- Rhapsody
I would've put a Finntroll album in my top but I didn't really listen to entire albums, only a few songs I particularly liked.

Those are both incredible albums, but I'm tending more towards either Powerslave or A Matter of Life and Death. NotB and PoM contain probably their best songs but also one or two duff tracks (Gangland and Quest for Fire come to mind) whereas IMO there are no bad songs on either AMoLaD and Powerslave.
