I feel like this forum with definitely have the answers I'm looking for. What is it that makes a horror movie really great? I've just seen so many bad ones that could have been good but weren't.

1. Characters a viewer wants to see live. Film makers should know that not every person in America likes the type of idiots cast for The Real World. I often find myself wanting all the "good guys" to die because I can't stand the archetype used.

2. Realistic gore. It doesn't have to come in buckets, but it should look close to being real.

3. A good score. The right music at the right place adds more to a movie than a lot of people seem to realize.

That's a start. Hope it helps.

I really like return of the living dead "the original not the crap sequels" It had a good plot, well developed characters, a good amount of gore, and a nice dash of dark humor.

That's a pretty good start. I would also add:
1. Characters a viewer wants to see die.

2. A few genuinely frightening scenes

3. A somewhat believable script.
