Pascal Laugier (http://www.pascallaugier.com/)'s Martyrs stars Mylène Jampanoï (http://www.mylenejampanoi.com/) (Valley of Flowers (http://www.gomorrahy.com/trailer-park/valley-of-flowers.htm)) as Lucie, and Morjana Alaoui (http://www.morjanaalaoui.com/) (Marock (http://www.christalfilms.com/video/fiche/55/)) as Anna. The movie currently is in post-production.

Synopsis

France. A night at the beginning of the 1970s.

Lucie, a little girl missing for over a year, is discovered wandering by the side of a country road.

Near catatonic, she can say nothing about what has happened to her. The cops quickly find the place in which she's been incarcerated - a disused slaughterhouse. Every indication is that she never once left the empty, freezing room in which she was imprisoned.

Filthy, starving, dehydrated, the child's body nonetheless bears no traces of sexual abuse - this was no paedophile abduction, but something far stranger.

What happened in that icy room? And how did Lucie escape?

Lucie is hospitalized - slowly she learns how to live again, an enfant sauvage gradually returning to the real world. In the hospital, she meets Anna, another little girl, and a victim of terrible abuse at the hands of her family. In no time, they are inseparable. Anna takes charge of Lucie, like a mother. As for her kidnappers, the police are at a dead end. Lucie's ordeal remains a terrible mystery.

One night, as Anna sleeps, Lucie hears an awful, rasping breathing. A vision appears: a body, naked, skeletal, tortured. Barely human. The apparition seizes her...

15 years later. A house, isolated in the middle of a forest. A family: Mum, Dad, two kids. A happy home. As they eat breakfast, there's a knock at the door. The father opens it to find a young woman, hollow-eyed and wraithlike and mad. In her hands, a rifle. "Remember the little girl I once was?" She shoots him where he stands, enters the house, and locks the door...

Minutes later, the family lie bloody. All dead. Lucie calls Anna, who tells her not to move, she'll be right there. In shock, Lucie hangs up. And then she hears it. That terrible, terribly familiar breathing...

Yesterday evening, the Commission de classification des œuvres cinématographiques (http://www.cnc.fr/Site/Template/T11B.aspx?SELECTID=1146) recommended to France's Minister of Culture and Communication (http://www.culture.gouv.fr/) that the French theatrical release of Martyrs be restricted to persons 18 years of age or older ("interdiction aux mineurs de moins de dix huit ans"). By way of comparison, the commission recommended that the French theatrical release of Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo's Inside (À l'intérieur) (http://www.gomorrahy.com/trailer-park/inside-a-l-interieur.htm) be restricted to persons 16 years of age or older ("interdiction aux mineurs de moins de seize ans"), and that the French theatrical release of Xavier Gens (http://www.xaviergens.com/)' Frontier(s) ((Frontière(s))) (http://www.gomorrahy.com/xavier-gens/frontiers-frontieres.htm) be restricted to persons 16 years of age or older, with a warning (to wit, "Ce film accumule des scènes de boucherie particulièreent réalistes et éprouvantes").

French splatterfest "Martyrs" offers a few genuine scares early on, but they're quickly washed away by all the blood tossed around by writer-director Pascal Laugier ("House of Voices"). With no apparent goal beyond keeping the ketchup count high, the pic dispenses with its plot -- basically "Hostel," without the laughs -- and turns its two heroines into human pincushions for the talented makeup f/x team...

Script replaces Eli Roth's thrill-seeking businessmen with a cult of wealthy savages who torture their captives to provoke a state of Joan of Arc-like grace...

Fangoria: Martyrs review (Alan Jones)
http://www.fangoria.com/ghastly_review.php?id=6689
But with INSIDE, FRONTIER(S) and HIGH TENSION before it, French filmmakers blissfully have no problem inspiring discomfort or gut-wrenching offense, and using violent outrage to drive their allegorical plots to evoke the Big Questions of our time. That fantastic potency is exactly what should be at the heart of such stimulating darkness, exploring the human condition.

. . .

It's then that a sinister group arrives on the carnage-strewn scene, and the full, provocative force of MARTYRS hits home. These elite rich are enforcing martyrdom on those most susceptible to uncomplaining distress - so that through their victims' witnessing of religious nirvana in the suffering process, they will learn taboo secrets from beyond the grave.

From here on, the plot must remain deliberately obscure, and the horrendous journey Anna is compelled to embark on unrevealed...

ShockTillYouDrop.com: Martyrs review (Gary Ogden)
http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com/news/reviewsnews.php?id=7872
Of course, director and writer Pascal Laugier intends not to merely shock, for he believes that he has created a reason for the carnage. It is just unfortunate that this supposed reason appears to pop into the film half way, as though he realized that he did indeed need a basis for the relentless disgusting imagery and created it merely as an afterthought. It is this sudden change in tone of the film halfway that ultimately causes it to lose its effectiveness, for the beginning is certainly promising. It is almost as if Martyrs consists of two films, one an interesting revenge-type horror and the other, a suddenly imagined mish-mash of violence and pretentious babbling that serves only as a showcase to see how far a film can go to offend or shock. Upon hearing the director talk about his film, it was also revealed that he did indeed not have an ending in sight when he began writing Martyrs and that it was conceived at a later date, thus the sudden shift in tone of the film. This confirmed my fears - it's the filmic version of Lost, it was being made up as it went along.

. . .

On the positive side, the performances are all proficient, it is competently shot and the effects work is stellar, but the phrase "polishing a turd" certainly comes to mind. However, these strengths do nothing to make the film of any true worth and just serve to give the critics justification in praising the film. Had it been a home-grown low budgeter, I'm sure it would have met with less than favorable reviews. Much of the praise has been concerned with the ending and overall reason behind the film, and to the easily-pleased it serves as a fitting conclusion, but to anyone wanting real substance then it merely results undeveloped and definitely does not justify the sheer amount of brutality that precedes it.

Well I finally watched Martyrs last night and thought that the film was okay but nothing special. The first family kills in it were well done but after that the film seemed to remind me of the lame 90's film called The Cell starring Jennifer Lopez and also had elements of Eli Roth's pitiful Hosetl flick.

I would give it a 5 out of 10 rating cause of the family kills in it and thought the 2 lead actresses in it did a decent job.

less gory then..Saw? Yup

Did you buy the edited version or the wrong movie?I actually watched it online. :eat: The lady getting her head bashed in with a hammer was kinda lame, all they showed was the back of the head and hair flying with each blow. No blood, no brain matter flying, nothing. After, she gets dragged out and you see her face and she looks fine.

When the girl gets "skinned", you don't actually see the skinning you see the aftermath, in Hellraiser we see Julia return from beyond totally skinless and looking for victims to take their flesh...very cool stuff very gory and scary.:scare:

The one girls psychosis was pretty creepy though, had the grudge thing going on, looked like the girl zombie from REC.

This movie didn't scare me at all, not even a jump... Overall, pretty lame and tame on the gore front. Shotgun blast splatters don't impress me much. GAR has better head shots and gore going on in Dawn otD...:)

That said, I'll look to pick up the DVD and rewatch it and of course support their efforts...maybe a sequel is in order!! This is way better than that Hostel garbage, though I did enjoy the 2nd one better than the 1st. :drinking:

I've heard a lot of good reports about MARTYRS. Although I'm not a fan of toture porn, per se, some of that so-called sub genre has produced stand-out horror films - such as UK flick, EDEN LAKE.

I also loved FRONTIERS and HIGH TENSION - the french know how to create a nice, moody trad horror flick, it seems.

This is an ideal film to watch having no idea what its about.

I saw it a couple of months ago, good effects if lacking in a bit in storyline.

I'm looking forward to new years as a group of friends and I get drunk and watch films to see in the new year. They are all a bunch of little girls when it comes to gore. I'm bringing this and Tokyo Gore Police.
