"Thank you for encouraging me to struggle through subtitles!" :drinking:
"Thanks to you, I have been able to enjoy a few of the more 'out there' films, like Witchboard, Pan's Labyrinth and The Grudge II. (There's a fourth one that comes to mind, but I forget the title, so I'll be asking about that one in the Movie Identification Thread. ;-)) Thank you for encouraging me to persevere, and go for it. I look forward to enjoying more of these types of movies in the future."
"Any one else out there, that finds it hard to get through subtitled movies, my advice is to watch it twice. Once to read, twice to enjoy. And keep trying, they're worth it!" :)

Bunshinsaba, Pan's Labyrinth and Ju-on 2 are great flicks! Glad you've taken the plunge! There are some fantastic subtitled films out there just waiting to be discovered! Keep digging!

I'm used to watch movies with subtitles my entire life. We don't dub in the Netherlands, only subtitles. So, it's easier for me to watch a foreign movie :)

I'd rather watch subtitled, than dubbed, though itch the killer dubbed is feckin' funny.

"I agree. Dubbed is definitely weird, but can be extremely funny."
"Now that I've broken down the subtitle barrier, got any suggestions as to movies I should keep an eye out for? Or ones I should avoid?"
Funny you should post this subject. I just watched Red Road which is a Scottish movie, and it started with English subtitles!! Unbelievable, although I suppose a deep Glaswegian brogue could be a little strong for those that aren't used to it.

Now you can watch all those badass samurai flicks like Sanjuro, Yojimbo, Seven Samurai and Sword of Doom (my favorite!) Toshiro Mifune is such a badass!

Pretty soon you'll be demanding REMOVABLE English subtitles and better transfers Darkness!! You're on your way to movie geek girl! Don't forget to check out the original Dark Water, The Devil's Backbone (Pan's Labyrinth is the loosely-based sequel) and Zatoichi!
Also try and find A World Without Thieves and Casshern. Both are well worth your time and recent releases.

Personaly, subtitles with me differ with films.
If the dubbing is done well, clearly i would prefer it over subs BUT even tho the dubbing can be great quality i like to watch alot of japanese flms and anime with subs instead because the true accent/voices for me add to the feel and flow of the film.

I like to watch my Kung Fu with dubbing. I'll watch it once with subtitles to get the story right and then watch the dubbed versions for the humor.

"City Of Lost Children was one of the first Subtitled Movies I pushed myself to watch. For one, I love listening to French, it's a beautiful language. For another, I like Ron Perlman and feel he's worth struggling through subtitles to enjoy." :)

You should definitely check out Delicatessen and Amelie then. They are also directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and have a similar feel. Delicatessen is very dark and funny and Amelie is a beautiful feel good comedy that is just hard not to enjoy.
A couple more gooduns are El Topo and The Holy Mountain. They would make for a great double feature night.

My favorite movie EVER is Seven Samurai.
I also recommend:
Throne of Blood
Yojimbo
Sanjuro
The Hidden Fortress
Ran
Rashomon
Kwaidan (4 ghost stories in one movie!)
Hard Boiled
The Killer
La Femme Nikita
Brotherhood of the Wolf
El Mariachi
Orphans (another Scottish movie that comes with subtitles)
Oh, the list could go on, and what the others have listed are good movies, too. I just love movies, whether subtitled or dubbed, foreign or domestic, classic or new, good or bad, I just love 'em!

"I just remembered the other one I watched that day. 'Reincarnation'. It was one with little actual dialog, so was a bit easier to follow." :)

"Hey, BD! Caught a movie, 'The Eye', today on tv. It was subtitled and set in Hong Kong. Is that the original one that's being remade?"
"By the way, it was an excellent one, I just wish I hadn't missed the first ten minutes. I hope to be able to catch it again."

I love Ron Perlman too! You should check out Cronos. It's the first Guillermo Del Toro movie that Perlman was in (before Hellboy).

I don't know if you would call them good, but these are movies I have enjoyed that are subtitled.
Battle Royal
City of God
Stacy
Revenge of the Drunken Master
Enter the Dragon
Night Watch
Day Watch
I am sure there are more. I just can't think off the top of my head. I'll post more if I remember

Yes, there are three books and were made into three movies. The third is Twilight Watch (book is called Dusk Watch). I also would recommend the books. If you like supernatural/vampire/shape-shifting/horror kind of movie then this is for you.
