Has anyone noticed that the scene in the Birds where the 4 people are beseiged is the same scene in NOLD? It was on T.V and sure enough they board the windows they fight of the irrational enemy. A T.V. report is mentioned and no explanation for the attack. The way they defend the house it's the same. Agree?

I don't know if The Birds was an inspiration but I do know Carnival of Souls was. I remember hearing Romero say that somewhere...course, can't remember where.

Yup, Night of the Living Dead clearly owes a debt to The Birds, as it does to The Last Man on Earth and, to a lesser extent, Carnival of Souls.

Its been a long time since I saw Carnival. How are it and NOTLD alike?

I'd say quite a few directors have been inspired by Hitchcock, including Romero.

The ghosts towards the end of Carnival of Souls are said to have influenced how the zombies (or ghouls, as Romero referred to them at the time) were photographed in Night.

Carnival of Souls is really frightening. The 'ghost' at the car window had to be a visual influence on George Romero

I wonder if the scene in Carnival Of Souls where the Ghouls or Ghosts are coming out of the water influenced Romero for LOTD scene where the Zombies are walking out of the water in the same way.

They are awfully similar. Romero is also familiar with this movie. About 12 yrs ago he hosted a Horrorthon on the Scifi Channel. One of the Movies was Carnival Of Souls and and of course his NOLD. I wonder if that planted a germ or gremlin in his unconscious mind or I'm reading to much into this. Just a thought.:loon:

Influences can be subconscious or otherwise. Some authors won't read fiction when they're working for fear of unwittingly aping the style.

And, of course, all art builds on what came before it.

Very True!! When I wrote short stories for English I only read for research and didn't go near fiction. They say history repeats itself. Well I guess art does as well. It's all been done before. Pretty much anyway.
