I've never tried these programs because I already have an editing program. But they are free so go ahead and try them out. I am sure they're better then WindowsMM.

In the statistics Avid has been falling out of favor over the last few years in favor of Adobe (PC) and Final Cut Pro (MAC). After editing on an Avid, I can understand why. What has made Avid so popular is that it was the first non-linear editing system for broadcast use. All of the old-hats learned on Avid and now teach on Avid. Some editing houses only accept Avid due to this. Also, until recently, the MAC blew away the PC but that is now no longer the case. A little heads up: Both the MAC and PC contain the same Intel Core 2 Duo processor, the same RAM, the same hard-disk, and the same video cards. So honestly, just go with what you are comfortable with. As for editing software, I suggest either Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro. Both programs are now offered for both MAC and PC. Editors on the west cost tend more towards Final Cut Pro, but higher end special effects are still dominated by Adobe After Effects. Adobe also has software that allows you to seamlessly switch between Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere Pro, and Encore.
I am a BIG Adobe fan, so most of my experience comes from Adobe programs. You can actually download a free verison of Premiere Pro to learn on, and the liscense is free as long as you don't try to make money with it.
As far as the programs I recommend:
Video Editing - Adobe Premiere Pro (1.5, 2.0, or CS3) depending on you current computer.
Photo Editing - Adobe Photoshop (CS or CS3) More essential than you may think.
DVD Authoring - Adobe Encore (whichever version you can run) THE professional DVD authoring software. Accept no substitutes.
Special FX - Adobe After Effects (6.5, 7.0, or CS3) a whole new world in digital effects.
Audio Editing - Adobe Audition. Great for tweaking that audio just right, and GREAT noise-reduction.
The thing to remember is that Avid, Premiere Pro, and Final Cut Pro have the ability to export lossless AVI format. You can't get that with other non-professional programs. And lets not even get into HD. Photoshop comes in real handy as well. You'll be surprised how often you use it, and it's essential for making professional DVD covers and Posters. After Effects will seriously BLOW YOU AWAY. Check out the incredible things you can do with it at Video Copilot (http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials.html)
For some great tips all across the board, check out the videos at Digital Juice TV (http://www.digitaljuice.com/djtv/default.asp), especially THIS ONE (http://www.digitaljuice.com/djtv/segment_detail.asp?sid=149&sortby=&page=5&kwid=0&show=all_videos). Digital Juice also has some excellent products for sale, definitely worth checking out.
Anyway, I hope some of this helps!

thanks again. The one ive actualy got is adobe premiere pro 1.5 but my p c doesnt seem to be able to start it up. It installs it ok but its just starting up thats the problem. It works on my partners lap top but slows it to hell so i had to take it off:x. I will practise with some others and then stump up the cash to juice up the pc
