Ive looked around alot on how to do this, but all that i could find is to put in a fake muzzle flash when editing. Ive accepted that that is the way to go, but from everything ive seen they just dont look right because there is no light shown brightening up the scene for a second. I would like to know how to accomplish this??

have you discussed this with your weapon master. the best effect is to use a bfa and the appropriate ammunition.

For ultra low budget, for single shots in low light, you could use a camera flash just out of frame (as near as possible to the muzzle so the shadows are at the right angle), then add muzzle bursts to the frames in post production.

ytou might also consider keeping the actual muzzle out of the frame and using firecrackers [off frame] for the flash. this has the advantage of providing for automatic fire flashes of the approximate rate of fire. of course you can use singles or and length burst you want. if you do this be advised thaat the firecrackers usually don't provide the correct level of sound so don't try to use them for that, just record the visuals.

there are actually some situations that firecrackers can simulate the sound of a real firearm, but you need an experienced person to let you know what those are.

If the gun isn't going to be pointed at someone during firing, you can use a real cartridge with the bullet and powder removed. The primer in the empty brass should cause a muzzle flash by itself when fired. But if you kill someone with a shard of brass cartridge, don't blame me.

if you need to do that you need to be in a low light condition to have the desired effect [or should that be affect?] it also won't cycle the action. if you go to that extreme you should get blanks and a bfa.

The idea of the camera flash got me to thinking. If i wanted to use a machine gun, do you think that a light that flashed on and off quickly would do an alright job in simulating machine gun muzzle flashes?

Strobe light should do.

they're always flourescent white, aren;t they?
you'd need to put like a film over it or something, i would think... to make it a little closer to "real"

you could use a gel, but t isn't the same and the audience can tell.
