August 21: Return to the MANCHESTER MORGUE on DVD

Fango recently spoke to DVD producer David Gregory, who gave us the scoop about a new home release of Jorge Grau’s cult zombie film THE LIVING DEAD AT MANCHESTER MORGUE he’s working on for Bill Lustig’s Blue Underground. Previously issued by Anchor Bay under the title LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE, MORGUE will now get the double-disc treatment with a bunch of additional features. “At the same time I was in Europe shooting the STENDHAL SYNDROME interviews for Bill [for another upcoming two-DVD set; see item here], we did new interviews with MORGUE star Ray Lovelock and effects master Giannetto De Rossi,” Gregory tells us. “We got Giannetto to talk about the genesis of his zombie-making, because MORGUE was his first undead movie.

“But the most fun one was, we got director Jorge Grau to come over, and we went to the locations of the city center of Manchester,” Gregory continues. “We went back to the hospital where the action goes down. It’s now completely derelict, so we broke in there—well, Jorge went first!—and went inside and explained everything, and we went to the stepping stones where the first zombies attacked, and the cemetery where that attack happens. Jorge was amazing; the guy has such a vivid memory of everything. A guy by the name of Gianluca Castaldi came over to basically interview him in Spanish, and they gave us a ton of really good stuff. So there’ll be about a 40-minute featurette just going over the history of MORGUE. And at the same time, I did some more Jess Franco featurettes for Bill as well.” Look for updates on the new MORGUE DVD release in the near future. —Michael Gingold

I have the Anchor Bay Fright Pack version of this film. Unless the movie has dramically changed... that'll be good enough for me. But with Blue Underground getting ahold of the movie, huge fans of this flick will be pleased. BU does a great job of re-releasing classics. I was extremely impressed with my BU edition of Zombie, they really cleaned it up and made it look fantastic.

I hope this edition makes it to the UK. It's one of my favourites, even if the geography (there's around a hundred miles between Manchester and the Lake District) is a tad out of whack.

Interesting news, thanks OP. :)

I have the UKR2 of this, I don't plan on the upgrade. :)

Oooh I don't like that cover.

Hope no one wanted to know who DOESN'T make it to the end of the film...
