Heard TBD mention this a little while back. I've never been disappointed when Tim Burton and Johnny Depp work together, so I'll most definitely be at this one!!!

Synopsis...

Stephen Sondheim musical thriller revolves around Benjamin Barker alias Sweeney Todd, (Depp) who returns to London after being deported to find out what happened to his wife and child at the hands of Judge Turpin. When he learns of their terrible fate he joins fortunes with Mrs. Nellie Lovett, the baker downstairs from his barbershop, and sets out to seek revenge.

If I'm not mistaken this is an old Scottish tale. My father (who was born and raised in Scotland) used to tell me the story of Sweeny Todd when I was just a wee bairn :) and it creeped me out every time.

HOLYHELL.

I'm hooked. A musical? A blood-thirsty murderer with a vendetta? TIM BURTON & JOHNNY DEPP?

YES PLEASE.

There's two things I'll point out though...first..."THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET" sub-title will never make it to theaters. Demon? nope. They'll probably just settle on the title SWEENEY TODD. If they go with "Demon" I'll be shocked.

Also...Christmas? I don't know. I remember the uproar over Black Christmas playing during Christmas. This may be accepted a bit more because of Depp and Burton but I do expect some backlash.

Thank's Jack! The trailer was great.

As far as the title TBD, I hope you're wrong. I'd like to think that the planet for the most part, has evolved beyond some of their sillier fears.

"Dent, could you be referring to the tale of Sawney Bean, one of the tales believed to be the root of the Sweeney Todd story?"

"As for this movie, I had the pleasure of seeing this as a stage musical, not too long ago, and I fell in love with the twisted plot and storyline. I can't wait to see the joint venture between Depp and Burton."

"I am also pleased to see Helena Bonham Carter in this too. She works so well with Johnny. IMHO." :)

As Darkness stated, it's been a musical for alot longer than some of us have been alive, so why would Tim Burton change it? We should be thankful that there's a director with the balls to take this on.

You said the one word that would do this movie a great deal: "Change."
Change my friend can do alot of good. If it was musical wouldn't you want to see something different for a "change." I'm sorry Christmas is coming up, and with all the carolling that's going to be playing wouldn't you want to see something where you don't have put earplugs on? However, a good holiday, X-mas deserves people to put their mind to serious thought. We need to see more realistic entertainment, even though there are no bare facts about Sweeney Todd being an actual case. I think horror deserves that.

"Sweeney Todd is an old urban legend based on a collection of similar stories. It began as a short story, and grew from there. Many believe it is based on a true story, somewhere, but when researched it appears to be from several legends combined. It has been portrayed only a few of times as a serious drama type play."

(*"The String of Pearls was adapted as a melodrama in 1847 by George Dibdin Pitt and opened at the Britannia Theatre in Hoxton, with the title Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber of Fleet Street and billed as 'founded on fact'. It was something of a success, and the story spread by word of mouth and took on the quality of an urban legend. Various versions of the tale were staples of the British theatre for the rest of the century."*)

(*"In 1936 a film version of the Victorian melodrama was made, called Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street, starring Tod Slaughter in the title role."*)

(*"The British playwright Christopher Bond wrote a 1973 play titled Sweeney Todd. This version of the story was the first to give Todd a motive other than pure greed: he is a wrongfully imprisoned barber named Benjamin Barker who returns under the name Sweeney Todd to London after fifteen years in Australia to find that the judge responsible for his imprisonment has raped and murdered his young wife. He swears revenge, but when his plans face obstacles, he begins to slash the throats of his customers. This new element of Sweeney Todd being motivated by vengeance was Bond's way of grafting dramatic themes from The Revenger's Tragedy onto George Dibdin Pitt's stage plot."*)

"But was made most famous in 1979, when Stephen Sondheim composed the Broadway musical Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, with a book by Hugh Wheeler, based on the Bond play. The character of Marjorie Lovett was renamed Nellie Lovett for this version of the story. Sondheim called it a "musical thriller" and, due to its sparse non-sung dialogue, "virtually an opera". When I saw the musical at a major Performance Theater, it was anything but tame. Even set to music, this story will chill you."

"As for Johnny Depp, he can act, he sure can sing, and I, for one, happen to like his jokes. But we mustn't assume that he will be writing all his own jokes. There IS a set script to the musical, and it's my understanding it will be followed very closely. After all, if it's not broke, why fix it?" :)

I saw previews for this movie, but I don't think I'll see this in theaters. With I Am Legend and other movies coming around Christmas, I think I'll wait for DVD, and even then I might not see it. I have to say that while Tim Burton has a great creepy uniqueness put in all his films, they're starting to feel similar to each other. I mean, the setting feels too much like Corpse Bride, and Johnny Depp's character even looks like Edward Scissorhands in this film! I know a lot of people here have good feelings about this musical, but I'm gonna stay out for this one, just for a while. Who knows, maybe this musical remake will be a great film (I know that The Producers with Nathan Lane & Matthew Broderick kicked ass).

And also, Johnny Depp's character also kinda looks like the lead to the band Dot Dot Dot from The Next Great American Band. Just an observation.

You people sound like you haven't seen a Johnny Depp movie in your life! This man has been making bad jokes throughout his filming career. Well...since it's a dark, dank thriller, I get rid of the musical bit. No need for that, and make this into a really serious murder mystery turned decrepit. What makes you think that it WON'T be a serious murder mystery? Was Rocky Horror any less of a fierce comedic stab at old sci-fi movies just because it was a musical? So what you're saying is that Tim Burton is trying to imitate Rocky Horror. It sure seems it. However I really think this type of movie for this type of season should really put emphasis on the condition of the time. I saw in the trailer Depp was wearing a back pack, leather and black. Some things in this movie includes modern day tech. or products and that shouldn't be, especially for that time period. And his hair haven't changed from that whacky Scissorhand movie. He never said anything like that nor has it ever seemed Burton has tried to imitate Rocky Horror. You have seen Rocky Horror, right? Nothing about Burton's grimy, Victorian aesthetics even remotely resemble the 70's, glam-rock sub-cultural style that's made Rocky Horror a cult phenomenon. While I'm sure it's played some small influence in Burton's filmmaking I'm apt to believe it's made far more of an impact concerning style on a filmmaker like John Waters.

If you're going to talk cinema, be sure you're talking about films you've seen first.

Why deviate from Burton's trademark nightmarish style and the original stage play? Both have worked just fine so far and have continued to be fan favorites.

I have to admit that seeing Sascha Cohen in a non comedy role will be interesting, because he's got such a great grip on becoming a character, that I'm sure after the intimal "Oh hey, its that borat guy" you'll get lost in the character and not the actor.

And Alan Rickman is a badass.

I could maybe see a company like NECA doing some replica stuff for the film, I mean, its a Johnny Depp/Tim Burton movie, there's going to be Sweeney Todd stuff out the wazoo in every Hot Topic in America.

Like I was saying, I could see NECA doing a few action figures maybe, like the Grindhouse series they did, or maybe adding Sweeney to their "Cult Classics" line or something.

That would be pretty awesome though, a little tiny Sweeney Todd and chair.

And Spencer's and Suncoast.
They've gotta do one with the chair, that would definitely be cool.

HOW F**KING COOL IS THIS?!

Here's the opening credits for Sweeney Todd!! From the opening notes it became obvious that I'm definitely gonna be purchasing this soundtrack!! I've watched it three times now and the music sends chills up my spine every single time! I haven't gotten that since Christopher Young's incredible music on the first two Hellraiser movies!!! God I can't wait for this flick!!!!

Great find Jack. There will be two soundtrack versions, complete and highlights. I'm feeling this will probably be a christmas present for someone I know.

I'd recommend this flick to anyone, even if you don't enjoy musicals. Depp, Carter, Rickman and everyone else in the cast were spot on. Seems Burton is back on form with this nasty piece of work:)

Went last night and all I can say is that Tim Burton has once again outdone himself! Outstanding movie with superb acting and musical score along with plenty of blood for the gore hounds!!! Whoever played "The Beetle" was one of the creepiest characters I can recall in recent years, and Helena Bonham Carter should definitely get an Oscar for her performance! Can't wait to see this one again!! 9/10

Simply put.... Amazing! I loved this movie. I was also amused that some of the people in the theatre didnt realize it was a musical, and walked out 20 minutes in... before all the bloodshed. Such a shame. I will own the soundtrack, and rock out to it accordingly.

"I LOVED IT!!!!!"

"I soooo want this soundtrack!!! I want the movie too. :) It was awesome! The songs, the gore, the fairytale atmosphere killings, all the wonderful settings and scenes. Tim Burton definitely out did himself this time." :drinking:

"I, too, had a good laugh at the ones who walked out too soon. But I give kudos to the couple who were sitting beside us. They stuck it out, and afterwards said they were glad they did, and would go see it again."

I saw this yesterday afternoon and I went in having never heard any of the music (other than what was in the trailer) and I was astonished.

from a cinematic point of view, the movie was fantastic, the direction was great, the actors were marvelous and made you believe in their characters (Ms.Lovette had me laughing almost every time she broke into song)

and from a musical stand point, I was shocked by the complexity of the music and also by the beauty of it all. I felt a bit bad for the actors because the rhythms and speed of some of the songs were absolutely horrifying *from a musicians/singers perspective* but all in all, Loved the film, Gotta get my hands on the soundtrack ASAP and can't wait for the DVD.

I've wanted to see Sweeney Todd, and I've been wanting to see it even more since I heard the soundtrack on Thursday! My art teacher was playing the CD continuously in Art Class, and the music just sounded so awesome! I hope to see this in theaters soon!

Looks like the Oscar nods are passing up Helena Bonham-Carter. :loon:

Johnny Depp is nominated for best actor, and the movie is nominated in both the best art direction and best costume categories. I really expected to see it in the best cinematography category as well, but it wasn't. Oh well...
