DEAD OF NIGHT currently on DVD as Death Dream

Bob Clark (Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things, Deranged, Christmas Story) directed this slow paced but effective story based on the classic "Monkey's Paw". In this case, the mother wants her dead son back so badly that one night, he actually returns at their doorstep after being considered deceased by the Armed Forces during the Vietnam War. But something's not right with Andy as they soon discover. He's dead, rocking in his chair with few words said to his caring family, well acted by John Marley(Godfather) playing the father, and Lynn Carlin as the mother.

The story develops around Andy, who must inject blood into his body to keep from decaying. The effects were done by Alan Ormsby and Tom Savini (his first film). There's some solid extras including two commentaries, 10 minute interview with Tom Savini and one with Richard Backus (Andy).

Always enjoyed the Monkey's Paw story, and this film delivers much of the same grim storyline of a son returned by his mother's wish. It falls into the zombie catagory especially during the middle to end, as Andy becomes more decayed despite his blood intake from his victims. He's officially dead, but still moving, rarely talking, and the zombie make up is definitely well done in terms of looking severely decayed and horrific.

There are some similarities to Romero's Martin here, where a lone man has difficulty fitting into his world, carefully selecting his victims at night, with slow but effective pacing.

Enjoyed it.
