the following is a brief, 5 point, spoiler free review of the film Biohazardous (2001) available on DVD.
1 - Biohazardous is a run-of-the-mill indie zombie flick with the basic premise of a government funded genetic research facility, where nearly all the action takes place (lit in the standard totally unrealistic multitude of bright hues emanating from each room) having an issue with containing the undead at the same time as 3 different groups manage to break into their premises. The first being a trio of puritanical christians. The second being two stubbornly investigative cops and the third being the obligatory group of pissed up high school teens (god bless 'em)
2 - The best thing about this film is the gore effects. Which it has, quite rightly, won independent film awards for. The zombies look like you want them too and the attacks (and there are plenty) spill a satisfying amount of claret.
3 - The only award winning part of this film is the gore effects.
4 - Characters are cliched but not to the level of being satisfyingly camp or knowingly satirical. Acting is slightly above standard for the indie scene. Not oscar worthy, in fact sometimes downright cringeworthy, but generally watchable.
5 - The zombies themselves (apart from one rather ridiculous 'super zombie') are of the romero type. Though the edit does not make it entirely clear if headshots are the only means of killing them (but for pedants the script does clear that up quite clearly).
Out of 5 as a general film: *1/2
Out of 5 as a zombie flick: **1/2
Recommended as: Something to satiate the hunger between more satisying releases/a filler in a zombie movie marathon, the type of film it's ok to make popcorn in without pausing.
Ranks above: Zombie lake, the laughing dead.
Ranks just below: Flesheater
(p.s. thinking of using this spoiler free format for future reviews. If it's shite say and i won't clutter the boards with it)
