Pain

“The premise of SUNSHINE,” explains producer Andrew Macdonald, “is that in 50 years from now the Sun is dying. It is no longer providing the energy and the light that mankind needs to survive on Earth. The entire global community pools its resources to send a mission into space to deliver a bomb to reignite the part of the Sun that is failing. Our story concerns the eight astronauts and scientists who lead this mission. On their journey towards the Sun the crew stumble upon the ship that was sent on the same mission seven years previously, the Icarus I, drifting in space. From this point on things start to go very wrong and it’s about how the crew react under the enormous pressure of their endeavor to save mankind.”

Some of you may look at this and think The Core in space. I want to warn you that you're partially wrong. Sunshine does have mission problems along the way like The Core, and there are other points of similarity, but the feel of the movie is much different. The pace and feel of the movie are more similar to Contact or even 2001. It's got that quiet spaceship feel to it(though there are moments of action). While there's external dangers, you're always wondering about the mental health of the crew. Not for everyone, but I'm sure some of you will like it.

I thought I remembered posting about this with you all... maybe whatever:)

At first I wasnt excited. but the trailer looks good and it has some good actors in it. I dont like Cillians love of long hair but whatever. I'll be seeing this. I love me some SciFi in space and we havent had a good one in awhile.

Yeah. It reminded me a lot of the early 70s "intellectual" SF. Such potential, but sooooo very boring.

kinda like 2001. but I love that movie. Clooney did well.. it just seemed they were trying to hard to make it "heartfelt".

...and I loved Solaris.

I'm glad to hear that somebody enjoyed it. I really did try to like it, but it just came off as something I'd watch if it was the only thing on TV and I was home sick with a really bad head cold. That's just the vibe it gave me; a feeling of hopelessness. A perfect film for a dismal rainy Tuesday morning.

Man, I LOVED this flick.... Really atmospheric. A huge, visual treat in the flick-house.

Tense action. A delightfully original action thriller.... Go see it!

(PS I liked Solaris! )

I saw it today. Didn't care for it. Struck me as nothing more than a showcase for some really cool SFX. Lousy dialogue, poor character development, mediocre acting, etc... And I really hate that hand-held camera look.

Interesting... I cant agree with any of that, apart from the shaky camera. But not in an annoying way.

I'm thinking this is going to be a love-it-or-hate-it flick. It'll be interesting to see the variety of comments on this thread... :)

I wanted to like it. I tried; I really did. I even managed to suspend my disbelief over the scientific bits. In the end, I just thought that this flick was a big, shiny, expensive, forgettable mess. Also, with the exception of Trainspotting, I haven't really cared for any of Boyle's other films that I've seen.

Interesting movie concept. From what I've read on a technical level, once the sun (or any star of equal size) starts to die, it slowly expands as the gases run out, getting so large that it will actually consume the earth at some point before it finally dies out and turns into a white dwarf or something like that. Normally, the sun burns billions of tons of gases each day, so to try and re-ignite it, I'm not sure it could really work for very long, but this film might have another answer to the problem. Another solution is to enhabit Mars or Jupiter's moon Europa (which has ice water beneath its surface). The expansion of the dying sun would take millions of years, so time wouldn't really be a problem.

Oh yeah, the movie sounds interesting.

US dvd comes out tuesday the 8th (along with Death Sentence).

I didnt like it that much the first time I saw it.. but its grown alot on me since then and I think its pretty good.. flawed heavilly in one area (psycho astronaut plot) but good.

I can finally replace my english dvd

I just bought this movie and I really enjoyed it! I did not find anything wrong with it except for the science parts (Good thing I am not a scientist). Great movie! Must see.

It was quite good. I really enjoyed the way they dealt with space travel as something that was exceptionally difficult and I loved the realistic sensation of outer space being a genuinely hostile environment in which it was a real struggle to survive. You don't see that a lot in sci-fi; usually they're just zipping around in spaceships like its totally effortless. I did think it got a bit silly around the time the villain shows up late in the movie (almost like an afterthought), and there were some points that seemed ripped out of Event Horizon, but overall I thought it was very exciting.
