Caught this trailer before Transformers this afternoon and became insanely curious. It was shown without a title or anything at all so I immediately began digging around online once I got home. This trailer was filmed on a camcorder someone snuck into the theater so catch it while you can because it'll probably get pulled pretty quickly...

Meh, judging from that article it's probably not a new Godzilla flick, and if it is is then count me out. To be honest anything with JJ attached worries me, his work has faltered.

I've read a couple of articles of people hearing references to a creature called the Cthulhu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cthulhu). Which in my opinion would be bad ass, because that monster looks so cool. It would definetly be something fresh.

If it ends up being Cthulhu then I'll be in line for the first showing. If it's Godzilla or some other revamped giant Insect then I'll pass.
No-one ****s with Cthulhu.

I've heard too that its a cthullu thing. They have somehow put a lovecraftian substance into slusho drinks, which under certain circumstances changes you into a monster. Check out www.slusho.jp. Weird stuff....
People have already reported, as part of the viral marketing campaign, trucks driving around parts of L.A. with the slusho brand name on it... Very exciting!!!!

It would be fresh. The only movie of note recently that invoked creatures similar to cthullu, other than the lamentable "In the Mouth of Madness", was "Hellboy", though many audiencemembers probably did not make the connection. Does anyone else know of Dark Ones, Elder Beings or similar creatures as part of recent scripts?

There's a flick titled Cthulhu generating quite a bit of buzz at the film festivals, though my understanding is that it focuses primarily on the Dagon cults and whatnot. Still might be worth seeing:
http://imdb.com/title/tt0478126/
There was also a Call of Cthulhu film made a few years ago. I never saw it as I've heard very mixed reviews, all from people whose opinions are sketchy at best :loon:

Yep, the viral campaign is in full force in L.A. And it looks like the Cloverfield/Slusho link is pretty well established now (http://www.slashfilm.com/2007/07/09/confirmed-slushojp-is-a-cloverfield-viral-website/). And Slusho may just be a sly nod to Alias fans......
As for it being Cthulhu related, well, I have my doubts. The most recent Lovecraft related project I'm aware of is appropriately titled "Cthulhu" (http://www.cthulhuthemovie.com/) but it's a 500k indie flick scheduled to be shown at the Lovecraft film festival (http://www.hplfilmfestival.com/).
I was really impressed with The Dark Knight viral marketing scheme (I managed to snag some of the Joker "I Believe in Harvey Dent Too" playing cards from my comic book store), but I'm already getting a little tired of whipping up internet nerd hysteria by a few subtle (and maybe not even relevant) tidbits thrown out there. I fear viral marketing will become one long, repetetive, dull, ambiguous season of Lost where lots of memes are introduced but nothing of substance is offered.....

Why would you be tired of that?
I'm not sure whether to take your post at face value or with a certain tongue-in-cheek cynicism....:)
Are you asking as to why I may become inured to viral marketing techniques? Well, as I said, "I fear viral marketing will become one long, repetetive, dull, ambiguous season of Lost where lots of memes are introduced but nothing of substance is offered....." It's the "Gabbo (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=gabbo)" principle that bothers me: catchy images/phrases infecting the zeitgeist only to offer nothing in the end. Let's face it, if this is not a film about Voltron a subphylum of fanboy will be alienated; if it's not Cthulhu, a smaller group will be disappointed, but diappointed nonetheless; if it's not the StayPuff Marshmallow Man, well, we all lose.....
Don't get me wrong: I think The Dark Knight did it brilliantly and hooked me as well. My point is that with Nolan's film we know what the product is; fans, and many non-fans, have a passing knowledge of Batman lore. So the ambiguity of the meme makes the quest all the more exciting for the fanboy without discouraging anyone since the end product is the same: a film with Batman and the Joker is in production. To offer up a meme with nothing substantive behind it reminds me of the whole hype over the Segway scuttlebutt a few years back. Remember that? Revolutionize transportation! Into the dustbin of history.....
The massive entertainment industry has retooled to focus on us as consumers for once....
I think it's been arranged that way for some time now. No "for once" about it. Hence my "I'm not sure your post wasn't tongue-in-cheek"....
I like it... Especially with lovecraftian/creature feature movies like this one.
If it is a Lovecraft based I'll definitely see it; if it's anything else I'd have to wait and see. Then again, the idea of a Lovecraftian mythos flick displayed via cell phones and digital camera footage is less appealing than I first thought; the big budget spectacle reeks of Godzilla/Voltron more than the atmospheric dread of Lovecraft.
Of course none of it matters. Then again, I just wasted 5 minutes on a zombie board spreading the Cloverfield meme.... The viral bastards win!

Well the footage doesnt look like its coming from an ordinary camcorder, or a cell phone anyways. Still looks like a normal film, but the camera man shoots as if he was a normal guys shooting with a handycam.

You say that a lot of viral marketing is so much sound and fury signifying nothing, but I enjoy the actuation of the zeitgeist, the excitement of the fanboys and geeks speculating about the movie. For me, that feeling harkens back to Tim Burton's first Batman teaser trailers shown in my hometown, and the shivers I got realizing the fiction space for the film extended beyond the four corners of the silver screen. Since then, the pickings have been few and far between for quality weird fiction, lovecraftian horror (and by that not "just" cthullu stuff, but stuff that is broadly lovecraftian-- like Brian Keene's "Conqueror Worms") and genuine brain teaser flicks (like "Primer" and "Mullholland Drive"). Most of "Lost" fits that bill, and now "Cloverfield"!

http://www.imdb.com/keyword/cthulhu/?sort=date plus Hellboy and some others I can't think of right now.
There's a Cthulhu movie this fall and studios do like to double up.
I doubt it's a Godzilla movie since I don't think they could keep that quiet. We talked about large robots, etc.. The main problem is that there would be major toy tie-ins. Voltron and other giant robots would massively flood the toy market. Ghostbusters 4? I don't think so. Probably with their style of hype - SOAP 2
Pretty much, it's just a large monster movie. Cthulhu would be the main "name" followed by Dagon that would be, if any, attached to this movie.
SOTA did some toys. Their Dagon just looks so cool.

Before anyone points it out, I know JJ has been known to lie in the past, but he did announce that the monster in Cloverfield/1.18.08 is a "completely original concept. A monster for us to call our own" ("Us seemingly refering to the US of A). If JJ is in fact telling the truth for once, then this is not a Godzilla, Voltron, Cthulhu, Dagon, Leviathan or Behemoth film. Most signs still point to the creature being named "The Parasite". Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Okay, I just went out and bought The Host today and it got me thinking, with all the recent J-Horror films that are Americanized, so to speak, what if this is the U.S. remake of the The Host?
The similarities are too much to ignore and just maybe, this is the big secret. That it's a remake.
Anyone else think this could be possible?

I don't think so. They would have to change the ENTIRE story, that and like I said, JJ has officially stated that the monster is an original creation.

Nice trailer, but I'll probably be more excited about it tomorrow when, (hopefully), the official posting will be online. So I guess the title is finally officially Cloverfield since it flashed on the screen in the end. So when did all this "first person" movie fad with raw footage shot on camcorders start anyway? I guess it could date all the way back to Cannibal Holocaust, but was probably done even before that in some obscure film that only TBD would know about!

I'm not buying in to this hype yet. It's all smoke and mirrors right now and unless this pays off in big big ways, it's doomed to bomb. I'll give it a shot when it hits DVD. I refuse to consider purchasing any tickets until I get a solid idea of what this film is.
As for the whole first person filming thing in horror, interesting topic to look into. I'd like to say the first instance of that was featured in Cannibal Holocaust but I could be wrong.

HQ Trailer Apple Trailers (http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/11808/)
Looks so good, I saved it and tried doing some frame by frame stuff. Theres only one part where you sorta see what the monster is but its so brief and not the whole monster that you still cant tell what it was. Its the part where the military is shooting missiles at it and you see the monster between the buildings.
There is are part where they hear something and it sounds like a buzzing sound that sounds kind of like insects, so I am thinking maybe it has offspring. I am so pumped to see this movie, but they should give about a little more info. At least we have a title now.
They should come out with a final trailer that at least shows us a glimpse of what it is that attacking the city. Unless of course we never actually do get to see what the monster is which would suck.
Caught the trailer this morning and was quite impressed. Hopefully the movie itself will live up to the promise.

Five young New Yorkers throw their friend a going-away party the night that a monster the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city. Told from the point of view of their video camera, the film is a document of their attempt to survive the most surreal, horrifying event of their lives.

Cloverfield is getting outstanding reviews from everywhere! I'm really hyped up on seeing this on Friday!!!
On a sort of different not...A few weeks ago I saw a video interview of some woman on Fox News whining about the Cloverfield POSTER and saying that it "appeared to be mocking and cashing in on September 11." That's right...I said she was bitching about THE POSTER!! She hadn't even seen the movie or even a trailer! In fact, she had to be told that it was a monster movie! Well, I pretty much laughed it off and discounted it as ridiculous. But today, I found a new article that makes my blood boil just as much. It's more of the 9/11 people bitching about the way the Cloverfield movie has scenes of buildings collapsing and chaos and destruction in New York City. Well just what did they expect the monster to do? Tiptoe around and be careful not to break anything? I don't wanna sound insensitive or anything, but I'm kinda tired of hearing about 9/11 from the victims' families. Let's honor them in our memories and get on with our lives, for Christ's sake.

So true. I know it was tragic and all for them, but seriously, when you take everything and consider it mocking 9/11 then stopping is really in order. 9/11 was a terrible time in every American's life, but nobody would ever MOCK it. Really. It affected everyone. Showed us we aren't as safe as we think. "Look, we've got the best military! The best national security! The best health care!" All that doesn't matter, bad shit can still happen, and it did. And, because it did, I doubt anybody will ever mock it or speak badly of the families who had victims die there, or any of the firefighters that died trying to save those people, or anything like that. On that note, Cloverfield is a ****ing monster movie. Monsters destroy stuff. Anyone ever watch Godzilla? Prime example. Some of that stuff just happened to be buildings in NYC. Entirely coincidental. Big deal. Get over it.

Went this afternoon and was VERY impressed! This movie delivers exactly what is promises. The action is well paced with alot of great shots of the monster, especially at the end! Anytime it started to get a little slow with some unnecessary video of some of the characters, (especially at the party in the beginning), the video would be cut and the videographer, (Hud), would begin taping someone or something else. As expected, though, there were alot of people in the audience that started whining as soon as the credits started to roll. What the hell did they expect? Godzilla 2? I guess most people would just rather have the same old crap rehashed over and over and never try something different at the theater. I've also heard alot of complaining about the ending for some reason. IMO, it ended just as it should have and I couldn't have been happier with the outcome! The CGI was excellent and the characters were actually likeable for once. There were even a couple of good laughs here and there from Hud. If you go to this movie expecting a first person view of a huge monster attacking NYC, just like the trailer promises, then you won't be disappointed. If you go in expecting some sort of life changing experience with steady cam shots mixed in with the first person ones, then you'll hate it. 8/10

I just want a camcorder battery that will last an hour and a half straight!! They really should've had Hud get a new camcorder battery in the electronics store scene. That would've made it a bit more believable. Then again, maybe there are some more expensive batteries out there that'll run for 2 hours. I only know that the one I have won't last near that long!

I was wondering that too, but Hud most have turned off the camera a lot.
Like during them going into the building to get into Beths apartment. That had to have taken like a half an hour to get up all those steps. and then took more time once they got into Beths building. She was a few floors below the top I believe. Then all over again getting out of those buildings.

I would have cut about 10-15 minutes out of the beginning and added more news footage. Not nearly enough of the monster in my opinion, however there are a couple of good payoffs. Overall, it accomplished what it set out to do. If you're planning on seeing it, the big screen is where it's at, I don't think it would be as effective on the small screen. As far as the camera movement, it did make my head spin and I'm not at all susceptible to motion sickness. I sat through all the credits (squirming because I had to pee since about 30 min's in) waiting for something else to happen and only got a couple of muttered words that I couldn't even make out. I'll probably buy the DVD in hopes of more news reels and monster footage.

Possible Spoilers Here...
Monster's Origin?
In the FINAL, FINAL scene of the film we see Beth and Rob on a ferris wheel at Coney Island. He pans the camera to his left to shoot the ocean and if you look to the far right of the screen you will see what appears to be the monster falling out of the sky and into the water.

Cloverfield monster from Hasbro on the way!!!
Hasbro to Sell Cloverfield Monster Figure
Source: Hasbro
January 21, 2008
Sketches by the fans of the Cloverfield monster will soon no longer be necessary, as Hasbro has just announced the following:
Hasbro, Inc. brings to market the figure of one of the most tightly held secrets in recent Hollywood history: the “Cloverfield” Monster. Following the 1-18-08 theatrical release of Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot’s “Cloverfield,” fans will be able to order a highly detailed representation of the beast beginning today exclusively on HasbroToyShop.com.
Standing at an imposing 14 inches tall, the creature that wreaks havoc on New York City in the film is immortalized as a super-articulated figure for fans and collectors alike. As with other beasts in the annals of great movie monsters, the creature in "Cloverfield" captures the imagination and tugs at the fears of thrill seeking moviegoers.
The party may be over when this beast comes to town, but the fright inducing look of the creature lives on from the creepy people-sucking underbelly to the swath of parasites the beast lets loose to hunt citizens of the 'Big Apple.' The figure also comes with two interchangeable heads, each depicting one of the Monster’s moods: calm or agitated. The head of the Statue of Liberty, the iconic image which made the film’s much buzzed about and analyzed trailer so eerie and intriguing, is also included.
"Hasbro is very excited to be working with Paramount and Bad Robot to bring to market a piece of the film for fans and collectors," said Brian Goldner, COO of Hasbro, Inc. "The fan buzz on this film has been terrific and we are happy to take part in the excitement."
The "Cloverfield" Monster from Hasbro is available now for pre-sale at HasbroToyShop.com for an approximate retail price of $99.99.

This is what you go to the movies for. If you do not like shaky it takes a few minutes to go for the ride. Yes the first 10 minutes were a little trite and a hint of t.v. footage would have maybe been better. As a native New Yorker, and proud of it, they captured the city excellent. My daughter lives on the otherside of the Manhattan bridge(Next to the more well known Brooklyn bridge). I did not tell her to see it because she goes over that bridge everyday(No, not in the winter) with her bicycle. It was a little too real. I'm not sure I liked the monsters face. You see it at the end. I liked it when he went in for the bite but am I wrong but it looked a little like a hippopytamus's face. But I loved thic flick, monster, people and filmmakers. SPOILERS
Question. Is there any known backstory? Where is it from? Is it killed in the nuke strike? Is that hidden message 'It is alive' meaning after the bomb? If we are watching the movie and the army recovered it. Isnt it therefore dead?
jackskellington
01-22-2008, 08:07 AM
Dude, you really should use a spoiler tag.
I personally liked the fact that there was no backstory or explanation of where it came from. As for it surviving the military strike, you can clearly hear a radio transmission in the very end where someone says, "Target is still active." As for the recovery of the camcorder, that could've been found after the monster moved on to a different area or something. It doesn't necessarily mean that it's dead.

01-22-2008, 12:11 PM
As far as the battery issue goes, there are a number of camcorders available on the consumer market that have a 6-hour battery life. Panasonic is one such company that makes these, and I have a Canon single-chip camera with a 6-hour battery that was purchased as an add-on. Now, you probably won't get 6 hours with the light on constantly, but you'll get damn close.

Yes like Romero who does not explain, this does not either, but in Romero you get speculation. I just wondered if there was any that I missed or was planted. As to 'still active', I thought that was referring to the stealth fighter strike, not the coming nuke of N.Y.C destroying strike.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!SPOILERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!SPOILERS! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At the end of the movie, when it switches back to the video that got recorded over, there is a shot of the ocean where you see a streamlined object fall out of the sky and crash into the ocean. Lending to the theory that it came from outer space (which is mentioned breifly as a possible origin in the movie).

SPOILER CITY!!!!!!!!!!!
about that last thing falling in the ocean. JJ said it was a satellite that "played into the hype of the movie" I dont know what that statement means though since I didnt go to the websites and what not
END OF CREDITS
at the end of the credits theres a gurgled audio clip that sounds like "help us" but it is actually played backwards (due to the camera being damaged).. when played correctly it says "its still alive"
THE ORGIN
JJ abrams has said that the creature is from the ocean, that perhaps the oil ship disturbed it and the creature followed it to New York.
on the talks of a 2nd.. he said something like "well we dont know how many people were recording during the attack"
THE HAMMER DOWN
There were two explosions, and no nuke was used becasue if that were the case the tape would have been destroyed and no movie. They probably used the MOAB (mother of all bombs) which is the biggest non nuke weapon in the US military's arsenal. The two bombs went off meaning the first blast put a shitload of explosive liquid in the air, then that ignited making the second blast.
END SPOILERRRSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
I didnt mind the shaky cam becasue in regular movies there is really no reason to use it, but in this it fit perfectly... I wouldnt have been as much into it as I was if it were just steadycam the whole time.
sorry for the long post, I was just really blown away by this film. I 2nd jack on this being my favorite monster movie.

BIGGER SPOILER STILL
In the new Fangoria paper and ink magazine that talk about the creator implying in preshowing internet hints that the monster was disturbed by the oil drilling ship and followed it (to Nathans at Coney Island for one of their hot dogs but settled on the Staue of Liberty)to Manhattan!
They are selling already a Cloverfiel toy monster made by Hasbro $95.00 !!!?

I'd have to say that Hud was the most likeable, maybe even most popular character in the movie. I went and saw it again last night. Everyone cracked up at Hud's humor, and as I did. Seems both times seeing it people around me were complaining at the end, and as they left the theater. It really peeves me.
"That was it?!"
What do people expect? That Rob and Beth were just going to stand up at the end and just whip the dirt of their shoulder?
Not to mention annoying 12 yr old girls who made retarded "funny" comments during the movie, and ending.

Your 100% right the dialogue and the characters were cheesey, some funny lines but cheesy, American cheese. BUT you really had to either go for the ride or not. So I went for the ride popping junior mints and really LOVED it. Like a roller coaster specially with the hand held. Its possible that if it came from the sea (which no one really knows) but if it did, its body might be really strong to hold up with the pressure under the sea. Because the sucker must have been at the bottom. The speculation is that the oil drillers (Taguruato I believe) drilled into where the monster lived and disturbed it. It attacked the oil platform, and followed an oil ship to Manhattan.

Brilliant..plausable explanation why the bomb might not produce enough pressure. I was thinking of the regenertive skin of a frog, but your explanation is better. I still think it would have sererated his body parts into...dare I say it..Sushi

Saw a TV spot last night just before leaving for work in which they actually showed a couple of shots of the monster. That's the first time I've seen it shown on any of the ads, but I guess since it's been out for a good couple of weeks, they might as well.

I saw a TV ad too that shows the monster. I was surprised. I guess that since the movie is released they cant really keep the monster under wraps anymore. Plus it might be a good move for the type of people who wont go see a movie because they don't understand what its about.
I heard today that Matt Reeves is definitely going to be working on a sequel. But hes working on some weird invisible girl movie or something first.

The monster came from space not from the deep ocean. You can see a metorite hit the ocean second to last scene of the movie during the Connie Island scene. Wait till DVD and you'll see it. It is easy to catch if you focus on the ocean.

Nah...
Its believed the be a "Taguruato" owned satellite, not the monster. That is why their website has been down. If it was the monster it would be much larger. The monster is like the size of 2 city blocks.

Has the movie had its 15 minutes of fame already? It hasn't even been out a month, and here where i live in the southern U.S., its left all the big theaters, and iis only showing in 2 small ones.
Check your movie listings to see if its the same where you are. I wonder if this will affect the talks of a sequel.

No way in hell. This movie is most definitely gonna spawn a sequel. Evidently, the monster was a newborn baby, so we've gotta be shown the mother eventually!!

Frickin' awesome movie, loved it from start to finish! Even forked out to see it twice at the cinema. The handheld camera style really made the picture for me, lending the whole film a very 'real' feel. Amazing special effects, nothing looked fake throughout and the monster looked incredible once finally revealed. Were it's arms really as long as shown on the toy?
Here's a vid explaining the end audio and some theory's about how the viral marketing ties into the story.

The One and Only
03-26-2008, 01:21 PM
Cloverfield didn't try to hide the monster. One must remember that the majority of the footage of Clover was taken by a scared shitless Hud, and a shot or two by some television reporters. Top it off, it was a big honkin monster, and a wee bit too big for some of the camera angles that were shot.

I don't buy into that at all. IMO, they pulled an "Alien" on us and purposely withheld full-blown images of the monster until later in the film. That and the crappy unsteady camera action made me dislike this film on many levels. But, like The Blair Witch and Diary of the Dead, Cloverfield did entertain. That's all it has to do to be a huge success. And, after three months in theaters, it has become that success.

I was over those films after The Blair Witch Project. I just do not see the value in causing the audience to have a headache while watching the film. Not everybody has headaches. But, I prefer a steady-cam that allows me to dig deep into the story rather than spending an hour trying to figure out what I had just seen seconds earlier.
I also hate the First-Person POV that unsteady-cam movies must use. So much of the larger story gets lost or untold. I refer to the "guy with camera filming within a film" style, and not the type used in some action films ONLY during specific moments of action and NOT the entire film.

I'd have to agree. Besides,if you don't happen to like the man with the cam, then you aren't gonna enjoy the film as much. that was my problem [wellll one anyway] with cloverfield and also diary. Unlikeable jerks.

It was just an artistic choice to tell the story. An ordinary guy would not have a STEADY-CAM rig filming a party, its unrealistic. Watch youtube videos of people doing stupid shit, most of the time once something goes wrong the camera ends up filming the ground. Its how it works, your eyes end up looking at whats going on, and barely at your cameras LCD screen. You knew what you were getting your self into buy seeing these films, so its kinda pointless to complain about it.

Why is it pointless to watch a movie and critique it? Professional movie reviewers do it all the time. I see it all over the Internet with blogger and forums (hey, just like this one).

my best friend knows the guy who runs the local 1 dollar movie theater here in town where they play old run movies that are close to coming out on DVD, and he is getting ready to take cloverfield off as its been playing there for a while, and tonight he had a screening for itsome of his friends like he does with all the movies hes about to stop running, and he invited my friend and I got to go with ( free movies rock )
I thought this movie was brilliant, one of the best done horror movies I have seen in a very long time, I dont know why people like to complain about the first 15 minutes as I thought that was great, and the whole "ohh boy trying to get to the girl story line sucks" I dont get either, if dude wasnt trying to get to his girl there wouldnt have been much of a movie, just them walking across a bridge to safety.
anyways I thought it was really solid, very creepy, and it does a really awesome job of putting you there and making you feel like the world is falling apart around you, my only regret is that i didnt see it much, much sooner.

I asked him what it was that turned him off about the movie and he said that the shaky camera got on his nerves.
