I found a local video store that has a lot of good horror flicks. All this time I completely ignored it, and they have all of Romero's Dead films, all their remakes and spin-offs, all but Rave to the Grave from Russo, and a few I haven't seen before (namely Zombie Wedding).
I always liked the Gates cover, and it seems that's the only good thing about it. The plot didn't make much sense to me at all, and it was pretty damn boring. I'm not sure why this flick is so well-known.

Nah, if you don't like a movie... you don't like it. I found the story a bit confusing but the atmosphere was fantastic. Plus it did give me the heebee geebees as a kid so there is some nostalgia value in with it too.

I'm going to be a broken record on this but plot wasn't Fulci's focus for this film. In the states we're obsessed with linear narrative and "logic" but Europe doesn't always see eye to eye with us on cinema. Fulci directed this film to be looked at as a storybook without words, a succession of images that lead to a dread state. His passion for nightmare logic was his main drive in this and The Beyond. For Fulci the spectacle and zombie (or gore) set-piece was the most important part of the film.

I did like some of the shots, but I can't watch anything without a heavy scrutiny anymore... Partially because I'm being super-picky about horror, always have been and working on your own flick makes it even worse, and partially because my girlfriend loves to nitpick horror.
At the end of the day you either "get" Fulci, or you don't. Personally speaking I love his movies.

I don't remember exactly what was cut but if you watched THE GATES OF HELL, I do remember it being cut and a lot being cut. I'm not saying it's necissarily storyline or dialogue that was cut, although I could be wrong but it's doubtful, you should seek out the uncut version under the title CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD.
I don't think it's really fair to judge a film seeing the cut version. I haven't heard anyone that would say they prefer the cut version of an Italian horror film.
Whether it is "cut" or not really doesn't matter that much. When it comes to Fulci movies the only thing that could really be cut is the gore. And to tell the truth that doesn't really add, or take away, that much from the movie.
But....yes, the City of the Living Dead version from Anchor Bay is a pretty good release of the movie, although I prefer House by the Cemetary for some good Fulci zombie fun. Actually Don't Torture A Duckling is far better even though there are no zombies whatsoever!!

There is nothing cut from the old Gates of Hell vhs I have. I wasn't blown away by City of the Living Dead when I 1st saw it over 15 years ago. But now I think it's an excellent film with amazing atmosphere.

Right on. Romero was, (or at least used to be), the best at the storyline but his and Savini's zombies will NEVER be as good as Fulci's.
