With the recent success of Fabrice du Welz‘s Calvaire (a.k.a The Ordeal) Belgium has seen a resurgence in its horror veins. But thirty years previous to that lean, mean slice of perversity there was another lean, mean slice of perversity; Daughters of Darkness.
Harry Kümel’s mysterious tale of a young couple’s run-in with a 300-year old vampire has been a favourite for Euro-fans for a long time now. Blue Underground has thought so much of it that they have given fans a 2-disc special edition based on the success of its previous single disc release.
The film kicks off with some midnight hanky-panky on a train. The frisky duo are Stefan (John Karlen) and Valerie (Danielle Ouimet) who are on their way back to England from Switzerland, were they got hitched. Unfortunately for them, the train gets derailed while passing through Belgium. They decide to crash in a hotel, where they are the sole occupants due to the winter weather keeping the tourists away.
Shortly after, the mysterious Countess Elizabeth Bathory (the excellent Delphine Seyrig) comes storming into the hotel followed by her ‘secretary’ Ilona (Andrea Rau). The Countess catches the couple during a meal and takes an unhealthy interest in them. Later that night, Valerie reads of 3 murders that have happened during the week in near by Brugge.
