Before I had ever seen Funny Games, I heard a couple of my friends debating the merits of the film. I asked if it was worth seeing, and the more dramatic of the two said, "Well you'll either love it or you'll hate it--everybody does." Well, I ****ing hate it when people make that claim, and I take great delight in saying that I merely liked the film in question. Lukewarm reception, nothing fancy. No hair pulling, no standing ovation. "It was okay, I guess, no big deal." A nice shrug of the shoulders helps hammer the point home.

That's exactly how I felt after I finished watching Funny Games. I wasn't outraged, I wasn't mind-blown, I wasn't full of love or hate nor did I even have much desire to watch the bonus interview with director Michael Haneke. I was slightly moved, slightly disturbed and slightly amused by some of the more clever bits, but for the love of Jeff I just can't conjure up the emotional response that the film seems to stir in so many.

The plot is very simple. A ridiculously Happy German Family sets off to vacation at a cabin near the lake. As they arrive, they are greeted by their friends in the next cabin and two young men with whom they are not familiar.
