Niku Daruma (also known as Tumbling Doll of Flesh, but known most popularly amongst the horror community as Psycho: The Snuff Reels) is one of those obscure little movies whose name circulates through message boards and conventions, inciting interest in people looking for the next gore-soaked exploration into a brand of darkness that's all too human. It’s a hard piece of material to come by. I mean, granted it’s neither as obscure nor as hard to come by as many other titles in the underground, but it is one of those films you really have to seek out if you're determined to get your hands on it. Currently, the most common means of seeing this picture is through bootleg DVD-R copies taken from the Eastern VHS release. Is Niku Daruma the hidden holy grail of underground horror movies? No. But it certainly isn't in every Tom, Dick, and Harry's Wes Craven/John Carpenter collection.

And it certainly isn't for every Tom, Dick, and Harry either.

Niku Daruma is a movie that, to say the least, is not for everyone. If you're content watching your Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer DVDs then you're probably not prepared for this film. If, however, you've got a taste for something a bit darker and a bit more extreme then this flick might just be right up your alley. My initial instincts tell me that a comparison to Flower of Flesh And Blood (the infamous Guinea Pig film) is in order, but that comparison would be a lazy one. While the two films do share a similar faux snuff aesthetic, the truth is that, in my humble opinion at least, Niku Daruma is a much...[READ MORE HERE] (http://www.joehorror.com/0000797.html)

I secured myself a copy from Visual Pain and it was harsh. In my opinion the blurring did take a bit of the impact down a notch but there's nothing you can do about it.

I find it quite surreal that just about anything goes in Japanese cinema (and Japan for that matter) but when it comes to genitalia it's quite a different matter. It just goes to show that the cultural differences are sometimes wider than we first imagine.

I think I might have to hit up VP for a copy then:)

I honestly love the sick twisted stuff. I am one sick F***ing puppy! Is it really worth going through the trouble of getting a copy and paying the price for it. I just graduated from college and I am broke. Movies that I label "not for your average horror fan," are "I Spit On Your Grave" and "The Last House On The Left." Are you talking that crazy of a movie. Cuz bro, if you are, let me know the fastest and cheapest way of grabbing a copy and I'll put it in a frame and hang it on my living room wall!

Tumbling Doll of Flesh (Niku Daruma) surpasses I Spit On Your Grave and The Last House on The Left. It's some of the harshest shit put out on film aside from August Underground 1, 2 & 3 and Flower of Flesh & Blood.

You can purchase a super cheap grey market disc of the film as www.visual-pain.com Just do a search for: Psycho: The Snuff Reels.

You'll have to excuse the bump.

But that was probably the most in depth and comprehensive review on this film I've ever read. Great review, I have to say I agree with everything you've said. I secured myself a copy a while ago from the ever-faithful VP, and if you're looking for horror it most certainly delivers the goods.

Just to add - in terms of comparison, I'd say AU: Mordum, Torched, Mu Zan E and possibly even Psycho: Suicide Dolls come closest. Personally I think Flowers of flesh and blood is getting a bit dated to be compared to this new wave of horror, but that's just me.
That said, congrats on the review. You certainly know what you're talking about.

This movie is basically as far as you can go. It out shocks the AU films, Guinea Pig, everything I have seen. The inclusion of xxx porn makes it that much sicker. The potato peeler to the tongue scene has to be seen to be believed!
I 1st read about this movie years ago in SHE magazine in an article about obscure hidden gems you can find in the video stacks in Japanes porno shops in Japan. I wanted to see this so badly, but assumed I'd never get to. Then I found it in Witching Hour's catalog and it felt like finding the holy grail. The movie is worth tracking down. It's alot easier to find now a days since it gets alot more attention on the internet now.
