I posted this same review over at the JoeHorror forums so if you're on there, and seen my review on there - you've read this. Comment or move on. Otherwise, enjoy!

Wow. An urban horror movie I enjoyed! Holy crap in a pita I think I almost had a heart attack there. I said "urban horror" and "enjoyed" in the same sentence...generally there's a "did not" in between those two but with this movie the "did not" can go on vacation. (Notice how I skillfully used a sentence dragging on about my use of common words and notice the skills I'm showing in getting you to read this explanation explaining it which pertains to nothing other than a waste of space and time. Congratulations. I've won.)

Anyways, the film started off in a very non-typical way, a comet crashes on top of a group of religious homeless nuts and soon turns their corpses into green slime spewing zombies. Two rival gangs are getting together in a nearby warehouse while the police observe as a deal between said gangs goes down. As things take a turn for the worst they get much worst when the zombie horde discovers the police squad waiting outside to arrest the gangs and starts munching down. Stirred up by all the commotion the gangs take a peak outside to find the police being torn to bits by the undead. A pair of officers barely makes it out by the skin on their teeth and rushes into the warehouse. The group soon realizes they must work together to survive as the living dead outside try to bash their way in. Can two rival gangs and a couple of police officers manage to not kill each other before the zombies do?

Well peeps, that's something you're going to have to find out for yourselves because I'm not going to give it away BUT there's plenty of guy munching and zombie carnage to please even the most distinguished zombie fan. There's even a nice scene involving someone's jaw and a horde of hungry zombies - you ever seen a human Pez dispenser? Now is your chance.

This movie was really enjoyable. Not poorly acted, although some actors/actresses were better than others and some of the dialog was stale and flat but most zombie films have this flaw along with the lack of logic on the characters' part (that's in here too) but the film still manages to work. With some creative shots, nice gore effects, and some of the better low budget acting I've seen in a micro budget film - GANGS OF THE DEAD is a fun zombie romp. It chills. It thrills. Most importantly, plenty of the red stuff spills.

The one thing that would've solidified this into getting a 4 star review would have been more of the gore and less talking. There's a few points in the film where all the characters do is talk, and talk, and talk, and talk, by the time they're done talking you have no idea what they were talking about and just want to see someone get killed. Thankfully someone knew what they were doing because they either deliver on the kill part or shove more zombies in our face in their rotten glory. I also must point out these zombies look awesome. Full face appliances give them a nice rotten look and of course the few background zombies with minor gore and face paint are present but hell they're awesome too! For a film with such a low budget, it had a great EFX team. Now the CGI...well even though it's only used for things they needed it for - with the exception of head shots, squibs people; SQUIBS - that doesn't look so great. But it's a low budget zombie film, if you're expecting George Lucas' CGI effects - move on, this one's not for you and you're no longer fit for human interaction.

All in all, the film has it's flaws but it has it's high points. Just like any other zombie film out there. Give it a shot, what have you really got to loose? Aside from the money it will cost you to either rent or purchase it and the 88 minutes you'll be watching it but other than that - what? Like you have something better to watch. Go on, try it out.

this movie has in germany released as "city of the dead"... i think to cash in with the "of the dead" romero films...

but... it was a good low budget zombie flick! not the best, but really enjoyable. it has a little lack of gore scenes and a bit too much of talking but all in all i will watch it again. especially the ending ist great ;)

Yeah I noticed a movie called "City of the Dead" being released on DVDVerdict.com and since they do import films as well, it didn't click that it was this film. I didn't order it or anything but I looked into it and the cover art somewhat gave it away so I knew what it was...

I really wish it was released under it's original title but what can you do?

I liked it because the deaths were interesting and not predictable for the most part. Good fun.

Believe it or not, this was released on budget DVD in the UK under the title 48 Weeks Later. Totally crass on the part of the distributor, but the movie itself looks okay (I've not watched it yet, but it's sitting on my shelf waiting to be played).

Surely nothing with Reggie Bannister in a lead role can be really all that bad!? :)

Finally got around to watching it. It was okay; the production values looked great considering the budget, there was some pretty decent zombie action and it had some clever ideas but it was bogged down by cardboard racial stereotypes, unsympathetic characters, and dialogue so cliched and lazily written that its difficult to follow what the characters are even talking about (literally every second word is "fsck", "dawg", "motherfscker", "bitch" or "homie"). Oh, and Reggie is only in it for a few minutes. :-(

Good review!

I liked this movie and own it on dvd. I think the characters were good for the part even if the acting wasn't great. The zombies looked decent in it and I liked Reggie Bannister's cameo in it. The gore was alright but nothing great. Overall, I enjoyed it for the most part.

Is this anything like Hood of the Dead?

Gangs of the Dead shares only a few similarities with Hood of the Living Dead. While Gangs was a much better film, I felt Hood was a bit more authentic. I may not like the Quiroz Bro's films or music (Darkroom Familia), I do agree they bring an authenticity that appears to be missing in "urban horror."

i thought this movie was a really solid zombie movie. i enjoyed the urban setting with all the graffiti and the zombies looked good. the green drool was a bit strange but it happens i guess.

SPOILERS - i loved the part when you main hispanic dude has the gun to the black guy's (who i thought was a main character) head and no one thinks he will shoot and then BAM he kills him point blank. i was like whooooaaa. - SPOILERS

I agree the movie was pretty good, but for different reasons.

I liked that Gang's was an honest attempt to make a true zombie movie. Yes, it’s another low budget indie which draws from a script that was written for a larger production. But, it does a few things right. The zombie canon was pure Romero; slow zombies; meteors; all dead reanimate (not just those infected”); one bite kills.

The main strength of the movie is the acting, which is quite good. The gangers are evenly divided between Homies and Cholos and their respective Ho’s, and it’s very ethnic. OK, rather stereotyped, and I am no expert on LA gang’s street patois, but the characters and dialogue seemed on the mark. Plus, it was entertaining. As is usual in zombie movies, humans are more dangerous to each other than the zombies. Here, they are probably too dangerous, truth be told. With the rival gangers and the cops locked in a warehouse, the outcome would probably have been the same, with or without zombies. Also, the gangers and cops are not particularly endearing, so it’s hard to have empathy for the characters. There is no real reason to root for anyone to survive. That is a major drawback with the movie.

The first thing that jumps out at you when watching this movie is... Nothing jumps out at you. Nothing jumps out and there are just a few tense moments, so it's not a very scary movie. Pretty good gore, but not much of it.

The zombies were not so good. According to the director’s commentary, zombie makeup suffered because of budget constraints. Plus, many of the zombie extras' movements and acting were sub par. Instead of being frightening, they were distracting. Apparently, there is such a thing as bad zombie acting.

Overall, an OK flick, featuring some good acting.

I saw this last year online for free then bought it at the mall for like 10 bucks or something a few months ago. It was a lot better then the remake of Day of the Dead with Nick Cannon hahaha, and better then Day of the Dead 2: Contagium. It was also a lot better then automaton transfusion.
I reccomend it if you can get it for cheap.
