Use of the word "zombie" in zombie films

I know this is usually something that drives zombie film fans nuts. It's this underlieing continuity issue where the characters SHOULDN'T be refering to the enemies the way the audience does. But, I had a thought...

As far as Romero films, it is said once in Dawn and once in Land. I can't account for Land at times, but as far as Dawn goes...

Peter had been talking about how his grandfather was a voodoo priest. He seemed to know a little bit about the religion because of it. This considered, if you wanted a "canon" explanation, then it could be explained by his knowledge of voodoo practices and applying them to what he saw happening around him: the dead walking.

I honestly don't know what the fuzz is all about. So what if the characters uses the word zombies? Who cares? They have movies don't they? They also know the concept of walking corpses, so why not use the word zombie?

I think you'll find the answer is more real world than story world. To be quite frank the word zombie is a bit silly and conjures up images of really dodgy, badly made B movies (hmm I wonder why? :think: ). Film makers want to make their film unique, and one way is to have unique zombies, new nickname and all.

Besides a lot of films are set in a reality where, we can assume, there aren't zombie movies/books (apart from a knowing few, House of the Dead i'm looking at you :lol: ). If everyone recognises a zombie as a zombie the first time they see it, where's the shock? where's the suspense? Where's the panic? Where are the elements that help make a good horror film? And again its not actually that rare, plenty of films do refer to our beloved grave dodgers as zombies.

Personally I would like to see it more. Make the stars seem a little less stupid. I'm pds that any one here would know a zombie if they saw one.
