It’s rare that a movie truly sickens and deeply disturbs me these days. I can take a lot. I have to. I blow through at least two movies a week for review purposes. That’s one hundred and twelve movies a year, give or take. I used to be squeamish, I admit it, but when I started reviewing horror/mystery/thriller films, I buckled down and sucked it up. I can watch pretty much anything these days, and it doesn’t bother me. I can take rape, torture, cannibalism, and evisceration, whatever. I’m not saying I enjoy it, I’m just saying I can pretty much watch it all now without feeling the desire to cover my eyes or turn my head.
That is, until I sat down and watched Karla.
There were times during this movie that I had to look away from the screen and just stare at the floor for ten or fifteen seconds because I just couldn’t take it anymore. Based on the real life case of the Canadian “Ken & Barbie Killers” Karla never flinches from its grim subject matter. It just stares at it with a cold, dead eye. It’s a gritty, well-made movie, but it’s about as uplifting as a snuff film.
