Believe it or not, I was once in my early twenties, and I went on lots of weekend getaways with my girlfriends and/or mountain cabin retreats with mixed groups. They were laughably stereotypical: lots of alcohol, sex and generic jackassery, but I never had a weekend excursion go Dark. I was never forced to face my greatest fear or fight for my life or find my inner strength in the face of unspeakable terror. I think the worst thing that ever happened was on that autumn retreat to the Poconos, when the bitch whose cabin we were staying at got in a pissy little snit when the boys ripped up mummy and daddy’s backyard with their ATV’s.
I feel kind of ripped off, in retrospect...which is why I suppose I now live vicariously through slasher films. They are the splatter-filled thrill rides I never got on any of MY weekend trips. I mean, where the **** was Mr. Voorhees when Sulky Princess PinchFace was standing on the back stoop, arms crossed and eyes narrowed, watching the offending ATVers patch up her back lawn with sod taken from a nearby field?
