I’m going to make a rather shocking confession and admit that 4 years ago I had NO idea what a Joe D’Amato film looked like. Have mercy on me, please.
Of course I knew of the man, but here in the UK it’s HARD to find a film of his; let alone a full uncut version. His two most popular films here are Anthropophagus: The Beast and Absurd, due to the fact that both films appeared on the BBFCs ‘Video Nasties’ list back in the 80’s.
A lot has changed since then, and you can pick up a fair few of his film (mostly cut!) through the evil I call ‘VIPCO’. A Company that has so little respect for the fans, if any at all. Each release comes in a hideous full screen, no-extras mess that they try to pass of as ‘product’, which is why it’s a PLEASURE to have a company like Severin out there.
Severin was always set for greatness, when David Gregory and Carl Daft departed from the excellent ‘Blue Underground’ early last year, it was clear that which ever company they founded, they would continue in the same vein as BU, and it has exceeded all expectations.
With its release of the Black Emanuelle Vol. 1 Box set, it’s about to gain some serious fans.
