Just in case I’ve never really ranted about SOV (shot-on-video) & micro-budget films lemme take this opportunity to get a few things off my chest. See, I love horror, I really do; been watching it all my life. I’ve found I can watch almost anything when I’m in the mood for it…almost. One sub-genre I’ve found nearly impossible to watch is idiotic backyard wrestling style horror shot on camcorder. In my opinion, most of these films are worthless heaps that do nothing but showcase masturbation, pot smoking and more masturbation. The large majority of these kinds of films I’ve forced myself to watch appear to be written by full grown men with 3rd grade educations and that’s only WHEN they appear to even be following any type of script at all!
Now I’m no hater but it seems to me if you’re going to make what you and your friends believe is a horror film, why not make something that actually attempts to be scary? Why must every ****ing micro-budget, shot-on-video flick be a horror/comedy? Is it just because these filmmakers don’t have enough confidence in their writing, actors or FX?
Whatever the reason, the SOV sub-genre is predominantly bullshit.
Imagine my surprise when I finally broke down and popped Video Violence in to watch only to discover it was fun! Folks, these old SOV horror flicks from the mid-80’s are what started it all.
