Yeah I did time, and I did it hard, damn you. It's not a period in my life that I'm proud of, but I learned from it and I refuse to be ashamed.
As a quivering bit of fresh meat I took the spot in the corner and jockeyed for some sort of clique, if only for protection. I spent sleepless nights defending my position, I went days without a shower, I traded entire meals for cheap hooch, and yes, I was someone's bitch. Learning to hustle new tricks and master fresh rackets, I became a mere shadow of myself. When I was finally set free, my soul was stripped clean and I was left staring blankly into the abyss that was my life, my life... "before."
But you know, grad school will do that to a person.
The one inescapable effect that grad school has had on me comes crashing to the fore whenever I watch a film like Gemini: I cannot stop thinking. No matter how hard I may try to drown it out with beer or Troma films, the ol' noodle is on red alert. No, I did not go to school for film studies or even pop culture. Rather, I am learned in the largely unpaid and unmarketable discipline of philosophy, and boy howdy will this flick do a number on your existential core.
