If I were to pinpoint the moment that I knew that I was a seriously twisted little monkey, it would have to be a particular magical night at the sweet, tender age of twelve. I was reading a magazine in my parents' dank basement, and I happened upon an article showcasing three highly controversial films released in 1990: The Cook the Thief His Wife & Her Lover, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.
The article explained that the films were causing a sweaty mess of debate over censorship, as these movies featured public sex, cannibalism, kidnapping, sadomasochism and multiple murders--a veritable potpourri of deviance!
My first thought was, I am going to get my paws on these movies as soon as I possibly can and then I am going to watch the holy living shit out of them.
Well I did, it's seventeen years later, and they are still three of my favorite films. I watch The Cook and Tie Me Up! at least once a year, and Henry... well my copy of Henry and I are close. Perhaps I've logged more hours with Henry than is "healthy." Perhaps I'm not "right." That's just fine with me because it's a kick-ass piece of mind **** that everyone should see at least once, maybe thirty times.
