In the late 1960s and all throughout the 70s, there existed a unique underground alternate reality of cinema disparate from the mainstream. It was a world defined by graphic sex and even more graphic violence. Blood, gore, and oodles of gratuitous nudity. All sprinkled with a hearty helping of off-the-wall, over-the-top, completely oddball, extreme, bizarro pulp weirdness. In the suburbs you had the drive-ins, packed with double features for you to glance at while trying to get to second base. In the cities, however, you had theaters that showed movies 'round the clock, back to back. They were trashy. They were sleazy. They were low down, dirty, skanky, dumb fun. Sadly, they were before my time. They were the grindhouses. Take a walk down 42nd St. in New Yawk, New Yawk and you could find a whole world of exploitation movie possibilities beckoning you. Kung-fu flicks. Gory Italian zombie chunkblowers. Nazisploitation and nunsploitation oddities. And slasher films as far as the eye could see.
Tragically, the days of the grindhouse are long gone. Or are they?
Over the last few years there's been a notable boom in the amount of new movies released that try to rekindle the grimy, grungy, nasty spirit of 70s horror. It seems there's a distinct longing for a time when horror movies were... different. Rawer. Grim. Gritty. Real. Cheap but charming. It was only a matter of time before someone tried to bring back the grindhouse era in one sure shot. Well that time is here and that someone is actually two someones.
