View Full Version : Theatre Vs DVD
Am just wondering what folks thoughts are on where they see movies. Personally I love seeing a flick at the theatre, I don't care whether it turns out to be shit or not, for the sake of a couple of extra dollars/pounds/euros it's all good to me.
However, i read all the time that "i'll just wait for the dvd" or some such comment.
Do we really expect every flick to make it to the theatre? No. Hell, we had the 8 Movies To Die For last year, which in my eyes would be a great excuse for people to get to the theatre to see some horror. But still, no we will wait til DVD. Well, not me, but the majority of folk.
Do people really not enjoy seeing flicks at the theatre anymore, or are they just too tight to take a risk?

I used to love the movies. But I stopped going to the movie theaters a few years ago. This was after having every movie I went to see ruined by people talking to each other as though they were at home, , chatting on their cell phone as the film was on, texting each other (sounds harmless enough, but when their cell phone screen lights up right in front of you it takes you completely out of the movie), I even thought I would give it a second chance and went to see War of the worlds. Can you believe someone actually took a baby into that movie? It screamed and cried throughout the whole film untill they took it out. It isnt worth paying $40+ dollars for tickets and drinks to go through all that crap to me.
I would rather stay in and curl up on the couch with my wife and watch netflix.
Very good point. I ****ing hate folk using their cell phones in the theatre, and haven't been adverse to shouting at them either, and it always has the desired effect.
When I saw When A Stranger Calls (it was for a review!) someone took their kid to that. I was stunned, I nearly fell asleep, so I pity the poor kid.
However, I usually try to go to the matinee showings wherever possible (comes to less than $10) and the theatre is nowhere near as busy. I just love seeing flicks on the big screen.

I would WAY rather see a flick in the theater whether it kicks ass or sucks. There's just something about a night out at the movies that really gets me going. Whenever I know the wife and I are going to see something at night I always have a really great day leading up to it. I've become quite the "homebody" in my 30's and really detest going out nowadays. My weekend nights off work are spent lying on the couch late night watching really bad movies, but the ONLY going out I still go for is a trip to the cinema.

Either one has advantages and disadvantages. The Theater is hard to beat unless you have a killer home theater system. It's fun to watch with an audience, but that can also ruin the experience.
You can pause a DVD to go to the bathroom, get a snack (that doesn't cost a fortune), rewind a part you missed, etc.

True. The only movies I have to see in the theater are ones with large-scale battles, like in any of the Star Trek movies or when the slaves rose up in the original Stargate film. For the most part, I'm happy with watching films in letterbox format on my TV at home. That way, I can pause or rewind to watch a scene again, and we usually have all of those nifty DVD extras.

When I was younger I probably went to around 10 or more movies a year. As I get older I find I am less able to put up with the common idiocy you see in most theatres. Couple that with the fact that many theatre managers (at least in our area which is run by a monopoly) refuse to refund tickets if other patrons are acting inappropriately I find it hard to spend the outrageous prices the theatre asks. If I really want to see a movie in the theatre I will generally wait until close to the end of it's run.
For instance, I really want to see 300 in the theatre, but there is no way I am going to see it next week. I will probably see it in about a month or so. I think the only movies I actually put up with large crowds for were the Star Wars films. Otherwise I much prefer the peace, quiet, and cheap snacks that home provides while watching a DVD.

Going to the theater was always a magical thing for me and I've been blessed to have been able to see many of the biggest and best when they premiered but as I grew older the magic wore off. Reality can be a bitch.
1. I hate people.
2. I also find many of the films I'm interested in seeing cut down to accomodate 13 year girl's with disposable income.
3. I've literally spent thousands of dollars on my home entertainment system.
While I do find hitting the theater for things like the recent 8 Movies to Die For important in my "line of work," MOST of the genre fare that hits theaters these days just doesn't seem worth the cost to me.
I have to admit that a lot of the more recent genre output at the theatres I have only watched so that I can get an early review in:lol:

I love the theater experience but rarely go anymore. One of my biggest gripes is the cost and then they have the audacity to run comercials.
One of my main goals is to build a home theater, possibly convert the garage. The cost of digital projectors is finally coming down. Then I'll be able to have a beer & a smoke, pause when I got's to shoot water and won't need a babysitter when I want to see the bigscreen get all messy.

Yep....I use to love the whole theater experience. Hell, me and the lady use to go every single weekend, but the prices we were paying were starting to get ridiculous (40 bucks for 2 tickets 2 sodas and 2 hotdogs??! ), not to mention the ****ing idiots that like to go in and let everyone know what they think the person on screen should be doing by shouting at the screen (almost got into a couple of fights over that.) I really hope theater personnel start getting tough on people who ruin movies for others by kicking them out or outright banning them....they have lost my business, well at least for the weekend showings. Matinees are alright but im at work during those hours, so it’s a rare thing for me to catch a flick during the day. I think having a nice home theater setup can almost re-create the cinema experience, less the annoying cell phone talkers and steep prices. I’m actually building up a pretty nice setup ;its gonna cost me big though, but I think it’ll be worth it in the end.

I chose the "don't care" option, which isn't very accurate because I DO care but it depends on various factors, and each has its advantages and disadvantages.
I like going to the movies because:
1. Whoever I'm with usually shuts up and watches the movie, whereas if I watch a DVD with my friends they tend to blab and distract my attention throughout
2. Bigger screen, better sound
3. Nachos with watery salsa and filthy-nasty "cheese" sauce that has never been within five miles of an actual cow but is strangely addictive and endorphin-inducing
4. Horror movies are good when you get to witness all the lily-livered, trendy-mainstream kids who spent their adolesence watching weak shit like Scream getting grossed out by on-screen mutilations, exploding heads, etc.
5. If you get a good crowd (e.g. at 11pm on opening night of a zombie movie) the atmosphere can be fantastic!
I like DVD because:
1. I can watch it in the privacy of my own bed
2. No chavs or thugs shouting obscenities at each other across the room
3. Can pause/rewind
4. Cheaper, especially for food
5. Wider selection
6. No waiting in line to get in only to find the screening is fully booked
7. Can drink beer without fear of being chucked out
Also, it depends on the movie being shown. If it's something I desperately need to see - a movie like Pan's Labyrinth or a George Romero zombie movie - then I will go to the cinema for the full experience. If it's something I'm mildly interested in, I'll go if the opportunity presents itself, otherwise: DVD.
I rent at least 2 DVDs from Lovefilm per month, and I try to go to a movie at least once a month.

Cinema - the sights, sounds and smells.
Being in an audience thats really blown away - magic.
Anyone remember seeing Independance Day in a theatre, you can't top that feeling when you are with so many people thinking the very same thing.
*At least I hope they were - hee*
'The Nightmare before Christmas' was another one I remember very clearly.
Oddly enough in more recent times 'Saw 3' held the audience.
Love it.

Theaters. Theres nothing like seeing a funny ass movie, and the whole crowd is busting up. Especially if your stoned.
I remember a friend telling me that they book tickets online, but booked OAP tickets as they are cheaper, and no one checks:lol:
Anyway, i'm hoping to see Dead Silence and 300 in the coming days/weeks. I think 300 will look spectacular on the big screen.

When I get the opportunity to go to the movies, I'll take up on it but with the price being $6 dollars to get in the one that plays the good movies, I refuse to go very often, but I would never dis the object of watching DVD's in the comfort of your own home. Play, pause, rewind, and fast forward, to me are almost a necessity!

Okay then. Heres a weird one - I was at the screening of Lord of the rings: Two towers. and kept hearing some annoying noise. Sounded like a radio. I kept looking for someone using a cell phone. Then I noticed a mall security guard had come in and was just standing at the door, dodging work, watching the movie, Thats fine. But his radio was sqwarking away. I had to get up walk over half a row of seats and tell him to turn his f****n radio off.

I voted for the theater, even though there are many thigns I dislike about going there, most (if not all) of which has already been stated.
It's too expensive. They run commercials, usually for 10 -15 minutes from the scheduled start time. Great. I'm paying a babysitter so I can watch commercials at an already overpriced movie theater! There is almost always at least one idiot in the crowd, usually directly behind me. Did I mention the commercials?
A big screen in a dark room is really all I prefer, so in theory, it could be done at home on dvd. Bad thing about watching at home...noise disturbances from around or outside the house. The phone, the kids, appliances, and to a lesser degree traffic and neighbors.

I voted for DVD cause like when you buy the DVD you can watch it as many times (For one payment) as you like without the expensive fee's of those thieves, although in theater its better in a way that you can see some people who actually do like the movies and possibly (but doubtfully) make new friends, but ya im more for DVD's

 That sounds familliar. I've lost track of the amount of films i've had to re-watch because one of my housemates joins me in the living room and chats throughout the last half hour.
I do prefer the cinema but don't really go that often for the same reasons most other people listed (too expensive, filled with idiots etc). Then again I don't have a problem going to the cinema on my own so I do take in the odd afternoon showing when everyone else is at work :)

I love going to the theater but no matter which I go to I have three that are about 20 minutes away from me. So even to round up a few friends and hit the movies is always a big event.
Saturday we went to see "The Shooter" and some punks kids were flashing a red sox flashlight on and off over and over again. I got so annoyed I racked the slide on my pistol and just watched them freeze and they looked over at me and I winked. You should have seen the look on the little butt surfers face.

Seeing a flick in the theatre is a rare treat for me these days. For that reason I tend to aim for going when there will be as small an audience as possible (long awaited sequels are sometimes the exeption). Nothing can make a movie experience worse than a group of teenyboppers who will not shut the hell up. I don't mind waiting to see a movie for a week or two to let the crowds thin out.
The long & short of it is that movies are best enjoyed on a big screen.

I prefer the dvd and theater for different reasons.
I love going to the theater for a movie I'm hoping I will love just to have the great surround sound and big image. But I cannot stand talking people and Im not the passive agressive type so I tell people to shut there mouths. Also, going to the theater costs 19 damn dollars now and that adds up beacsue I tend to go to 3 movies a month.
So I tend to just buy the dvds and exploit my netflix account just so I can have privacy, be able to pause the dvd during interuptions.. and sit in my boxers.
I had some dipshit "gangsta" with his kids of all people behind me and the GF at 300 saying "oh damnnnn" "oh shitttttt" at every damn thing that was shown. Until I turned and told him to shut his mouth.. he cowered like a little girl... good times.

My dad and I went to the theaters to see 28 Weeks. Well, there are these two peeps behind us. A father and son. Like me and my dad. The only difference was we were respectful and if we talked it was in each others ears, and only on a rare occasion. The kid behind us was almost yelling everytime he had something to say. Nothing he said was at all intelligent when it came to the movie. If someone was talking behind me and at least had some good input than it wouldn't have been as big of a deal. The dad, well, he coughed up his lung on a couple of occasions. Pissed me the F*** off. So, I think DVD is better. You are in your nice warm home and nobody to interupt but yourself. Yeah there's the price but I'm not really bothered by that because most horror movies that come out in theaters are at least worth watching, well usually. And you can bring pop and candy from the nearest convenient store!

I tend to prefer waiting for the DVD than cinema as a lot of my friends don't have the same film tastes as myself (a girl who doesn't always like girly films). I don't like going to the cinema by myself cos last time I did, this complete lunatic sat next to me and began talking to himself and hitting himself in the head during the movie then asked me after if I wanted to go for a drink.... I actually prefer to go to the theatre on my own (so I can bang my head and ask women out for drinks:lol: ). Actually I usually find that my company distracts me.

Ok of course alot of us enjoy the big vinyl screen at the theatre but, where do you prefer to watch a horror movie without the sticky floors.
Personally I love just in my living room solo with all lights off and all forms of communication turned off. Yea it's the usual but I love the feeling of stareing at my 62 inch wide screen LCD, than looking away and seeing a bright splotch and not able to make anything out, it makes the experience that much more enjoyable.

i am constantly in theaters, i do theater surveys and patron counts, that sort of stuff for several of the large studios and production companies. i also do employee evaluations for a couple chains so i see alot of movies, not always the ones i want to see though. it's gotten to the point that if i have to pay for a movie then i feel cheated.
many films are only worth seeing on the big screen, the experience being so different on dvd that it's almost a different movie. one film that demonstrates this clearly ws the fifth element, on the big screen it was terrible, on dvd it was hilarious. usually the principle works the other way though.

He was a total ass that got banned way too late. He shouldn't have lasted long enough to post his introduction thread IMO.

Drive-In all the way dammit!

Whoa dude, chill! I wasn't really meaning anything, it was just a joke!:scare:
Hoping to get off the subject, I also think drive-in theaters are awesome! It's really comforting to watch a movie in a car with a recently installed kick-ass stereo system!

They each have thier own distinct advantages,
some movies are just better wathcing them on a screen the size of your house, with kick ass suround sound and a room full of 50 + people, there are certain movies that are just "must see" at a theater.
but for me, for the most part, DVD wins out, for one, to go see a movie at the theater its 10 bucks for the ticket, 5 bucks for a drink , if i stop right there thats 15 bucks, god forbid if you add on popcorn or some candy it costs and arm and a leg, spend the 15 bucks once, and be able to watch the movie any time you damn well please, also you cant pause a movie at the theater to take a wee or a :poo: , and its a law of nature, any time a movie is playing with in 100 yards of you, you will have to go to the bathroom at least once.
so yea, DVD wins, but certian flicks just cant be missed on the big screen.

DvD 4tw.
I almost never got to the theatre. My sound system is better, and my screen is almost as big (I spend all my extra crash on my home entertainment system :x ). You won't be hearing a baby crying, cell phones rining, or popcorn crunching unless its someone you know really well. Sadly, you still occassionally here people talking, but that is what 8 second rewind, and pause are for (also, I hear news papers were invented for when people talked during the really good parts).
So you have to wait a while. Just make friends with a really famous person and get the movies before they are released in theatre. I've still been unable to do that (damn Spielberg still won't return my calls), but its always worth a shot.
...
Yeah, that makes me sound like a nut job, but its the internet. This is the place to say those things that make you sound like a psycopath. Its yet to get me on a goverment watch list... atleast that I know of.

Big Screen...gotta have the thrill, but don't like people so DVD is preferable. It would be great to have my own theatre!

I love seeing movies on the big screen. Its a much better experience(unless you have stupid people around you).
My TV kinda sucks anyways. I need to pick my self up a nice HDTV, and bluray player.
It would be great to have my own theatre!
That would be freakin sweet. I wanna have my own theater someday.

I voted Theater, but that isn't necessarily the case with me. I love catching new release horror on the big screen. Unfortunately, I live in Baltimore and prick teenagers tend to swarm to the theaters and make tons of noise. It seems odd that groups of them will spend as much as nine bucks each to ruin a movie for other people. That said, I often stick to DVD's in order to avoid the urge to kill people.
I use to go to the theaters all the time but now that I'm getting old and 37 that I just wait til they come out on dvd.

sometimes even bad movies seem better in the theater. i voted theater because no home system seems to be able to reproduce theater type sound. (sometimes that just makes a movie worthwhile.) shame no local theater runs midnight B-movie showings anymore. some good ones don't make it on to the big screen, and they should.

I have honestly never dealt with a loud talker at the theater when I see a movie, so I still love the theater experience. I do agree that they're beginning to suck more and more through the years (like $17 for a ticket, soda and freaking popcorn), but there's no substitution for the full theater experience, whether it's watching a full-blown action film like 300 or a great-ass comedy like Superbad or Jackass Number 2. Plus the popcorn at the theaters is not only the best ever made, but it's also a thing that no one can ever recreate perfectly at home.

Totally the theatres man! Big screen, popcorn, drink! What else could you ask for? Well, you could ask for FREE tickets.... but that's not gonna happen...

Not true! I got a free ticket for The Mist when I bought a DVD of Planet Terror! Free tickets are out there; you just need to believe in hope.

I'd rather buy my ticket and get free popcorn & drink. The snacks are where you get reamed.

Eh i personally would rather get the dvd of a movie curl up on my bed or couch order a pizza and enjoy a nice movie with no talkers/screaming babies/annoying teens yapping away in their groups.

I tend to enjoy watching films on DVD rather than in the theater. I like taking notes on certain movies and its nearly impossible to do that in a theater. Although, if its a movie that I'm exceptionally excited about (for example, the new X-Files movie coming out on July 25th!) I'll definitely see it in the theaters at least once, then buy the dvd and take all the notes I want.

I like to go to the theater, but time and money are a biggest problems for me. I usually wait for the dvd, it is easier to watch at home.

I voted don't care cause i like both. If it's something that would be viewed much better on the big screen like say 3D movies or big action films like Indiana Jones then i'll go but i like to watch all the old slasher & 80s stuff at home with a few cold ones.:drinking:
