Hey guys --
I just stumbled across the site and it's wiggin' me out! I never knew there was so much zombie love out there...
I hope it's cool for me to post about my own zombie movie, THE STINK OF FLESH. We just held the premiere at the Guild Cinema here in Albuquerque and sold out all four screenings. The Guild's been getting so many calls about the flick, they've scheduled another midnight show this Saturday (August 21st). The response has been amazing -- and it's a big help, since the money from the screenings is gonna go towards getting our final sound mix done.
You can get more information and check out the trailer and photo gallery right here. (http://www.exhilarateddespair.com/stinkofflesh.php)

LOL
Not bad at all. Not destined for a theatrical release but I can see some Zombie junkies into this. Didnt look half bad considering you used an XL1. The Zombie makeup was very good and of course hot naked chicks are always fun. Do you have rights to the songs or is this just for the trailer?
An admin might move this to the indie page.

Thanks for the kind words, Outland! So far, people really seem to dig the flick, which is very gratifying after all the work we put into it.
Yeah, those songs are just slapped on for the trailer. So far the actual soundtrack consists of rockabilly, country, and funk/blues tracks by various bands.
As far as the XL1 goes -- hey, it was good enough for 28 DAYS LATER!

Well, we're still not sure what the situation's gonna be with a US release -- there's been some interest and I'm hopeful I'll be able to make an announcement soon. I'll keep you posted via the boards as to a UK release.

The screening of THE STINK OF FLESH at Bubonicon went over amazingly well -- I wasn't sure how hard-core science fiction fans would respond to a gory, sleazy horror flick, but they ate it up! There was a group of folks in the audience who had seen it twice during its run at the Guild Cinema, and came back to see it again -- very nice to hear.
Don't forget, you can watch the trailer at http://www.exhilarateddespair.com/stinkofflesh.php
Next up is the screening at Cinema Wasteland! (http://www.videowasteland.com/show.html)

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
I was fortunate enough to recieve a 'pre-release edition' DVD of this film and let me say that I havent had this much fun watching a film in awhile. First off, I am a zombie junkie; perhaps not as much as some of you but more than the average viewer for sure. My favorites in order are: Day of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead 04 (I dont even want to hear it as its just my opinion), 28 Days Later, Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead '78. You can cap those with ZOMBIE and a ton of other DEAD films I cant even remember the titles too.
The cover art for the Stink of Flesh is great stuff. Just think 80's corporate clip art meets the Undead. I love it and will surely 'appropriate' this concept one day (That means 'steal' in the industry but really its flattery)
I sat into my office this evening, plopped on the headphones and turned out the lights and started the film. Initially, I tend to look for technical nuances as Im a wannabe/struggling filmmaker myself and damn it if the quest isnt to mimic film using DV. This film was shot with the XL1 (yes, the same camera used for 28 Days Later) and looks as such. Is this a bad thing? No it is not given the genre; if doing a period or epic an Xl1 wouldnt cut it but for a world filled with the Undead and this microcosm of humanity it works extremely well. In this day of reality television, the Xl1's DV look only serves to bring an immediate intimacy to this piece. I found myself at times feeling as if I was right there in the room, possibly witnessing as a 'not so innocent by-stander'.
If the Dead do inherit the earth as we all hope, er, pray won't happen, then one can imagine pockets of survivors in every shape and form, every type, every strange but true fetish. I about gasped when NATHAN (one of our characters) opens up a locked shed to reveal a full naked dead woman lunging at the lens in that wonderful zombie growl. I almost couldnt believe it when I saw it and then thought "This is great." This could happen. This is the kind of sick demented people that will survive and become all the more twisted in the process (What happens later will blow your mind.) It takes necrophelia to a whole new level, no, stratosphere. This is a twisted version of the TEXAS CHAINSAW family with a twist.
The talent isnt bad, but also isnt very good. One actor stands out and that is the character of NATHAN (Ross Kelly). Among the cast, I felt he did the best job and actually can act; hell, the dude looks like an actor. Its not that the cast is inheritantly bad they just are not that good. The character of Kurly Tlapoyawa does an okay job, going from bad to not bad but also gets credit for the fight choregraphy. There are several fight scenes in this film and they are done pretty damn good. The choregraphy is good enough to work; although Im not fighting these damn zombies hand to hand. Screw that.
Technically, its obvious that filmmaker Scott Phillips knows what he is doing. The film is shot in the original Academy Aspect Ratio (That means 4:3 guys) which is a shame as I embrace the modern 1:85, 16:9 and Cinemscope (thats 2:35) ratios. God I would love to see this in a Widescreen format. Scott Phillips shoots quickly and intercuts nicely. He obviously knows the rules. The film is loaded with Cinema Verite (just a fancy French word for hand held) but I think really shines when it is locked down or used on a dolly. I also felt that this film works best with the least amount of light being used. Im not talking aout low acailable light, but the carefully placed lighting by Phillips to illustrate Night or the sun light streaming in shafts through wood slits. This is when the film looked filmic to me, when light was removed and the canvas painted with dark and light.
The zombie effects are great. No less impressive as GAR's DAWN zombies and some of them are very sick. Im talking skin being removed and snapping as it breaks, guts being stretched, the works.
I reccomend you pick this up as it is a treat and just good ole zombie fun. It isnt a stylistic as 28 Days Later but has a realism attached to it. I am inspired and dtoked ot have been able to preview this film. Contact the filmmaker and say "I WANT MY STINK of FLESH!". This guy is doing it instead of talking about it and GAR would be proud, if not completly disgusted NOT by the Dead but by the Living!

Hey O.P. --
Thanks for the kind words about the flick, I'm glad you dug it! Of course, I have to disagree about the acting in the movie... I'm exceedingly pleased with the performances -- and fortunately, most folks who have seen it seem to share my opinion! :)
Oh yeah -- we planned to shoot the flick 16x9 but had to Frankenstein up a lens adaptor for the anamorphic lens we had, and wound up with a funky light leak... so we went for 4:3 instead. But the next one is gonna be widescreen 24p, bruthah!

Right now, mum's da woid. All I can tell you is it'll have lots of gore, twisted sex, and weird romance! I'm writing a FRIDAY THE 13TH novel (!) right now for Black Flame, but once I'm done with that I'm gonna jump into the script for my next movie. I'm hoping to shoot sometime next summer, if all goes well (earlier than that if things go GREAT).

Just watched this today. The characters of Nathan and Matool are great. I especially liked the fight scenes with Matool. He knows what he's doing. I appreciate that kind of stuff as I've been taking Akido for 2 years now. Anyway, the zombies were awesome too. Nice job with the make-up. As for the story, at first, I didn't like the way it was going but then it just clicked with me. I was like yeah, I could totally see this happening. All in all, I liked it. Keep us posted darkchimp of any new films, and thanks for the speedy delivery of my dvd. Keep up the good work.

Thanks, hardcoreone2! Good to hear you liked the flick. Kurly Tlapoyawa (Matool) is pretty amazing -- he competes in a lot of Pridefighting matches, and just going in the ring with those guys takes a lot of balls, in my opinion!
As for the next movie, I'm already working out the story -- but all I'm gonna say right now is that it's gonna be twisted as hell...
AAARRRGH!
I just got my copy of The Stink of Flesh in the mail today, and sat down to watch it. It was quite a good movie and very entertaining...until the bad thing happened. Right at the big fight with Matool, the DVD kicked out. I'm gonna have to pick up a repair kit and hope that corrects the problem. It's a good flick, and it is burning me up that I can't watch the last bit.

Hey is there any coincidence that the main character's name is Matool and the island in "Zombie" is Matool?
darkchimp

Nope, that ain't coincidence -- it's a direct reference to ZOMBIE, which is one of my all-time favorite movies. There's also a rather large walking corpse in THE STINK OF FLESH that bears a striking resemblance to that big ol' zombie on the boat at the beginning of Fulci's classic...

I'm not sure of the actual release date and they haven't posted any info on the site yet, but I think they're shooting for it to come out around the same time as the US version. These guys are super-enthusiastic about the movie (one of them even told me he hadn't enjoyed a movie as much since he first saw EVIL DEAD), and the company releases a lot of cool stuff -- Fulci, Deodato, Lenzi, Chad Ferrin's THE GHOULS, even Scott Spiegel's uncut INTRUDER! That's pretty wild, Mr. Grey... Kurly used to come into a video store I owned and stand around for hours back when he was a teenager... used to drive me nuts!
Here's a little more STINK info -- the website for HARDGORE, the company releasing the movie in the UK:
http://www.hardgore.co.uk/
I'm not sure of the actual release date and they haven't posted any info on the site yet, but I think they're shooting for it to come out around the same time as the US version. These guys are super-enthusiastic about the movie (one of them even told me he hadn't enjoyed a movie as much since he first saw EVIL DEAD), and the company releases a lot of cool stuff -- Fulci, Deodato, Lenzi, Chad Ferrin's THE GHOULS, even Scott Spiegel's uncut INTRUDER! Pretty darn good company to be in, if you ask me...
Thanks for the links

Thanks, Thing! I only wish we could've secured the rights to that Molotov song (and believe me, we gave it our best shot). It's still in the trailer because I haven't had time to update it...
And Kurly kicks much ass in the movie as Matool, man. Can't wait to hear what you think of the flick.
Oh yeah -- the release date has been pushed back to June 7th, but that's only an additional two weeks... we should still have copies at Fango's Weekend of Horrors in Burbank, June 4-5.

Here are a few review quotes for ya:
"The Stink of Flesh is a fantastic entry in the zombie subgenre. Great characters, talented filmmaking, an inventive storyline, and enough exploitation elements to keep the gore hounds happy. Definitely recommended and in my humble opinion, a far better film than 28 Days Later."
--Lawrence Raffel, Monsters At Play
"It's f@cking AWESOME!"
-- Scott Spiegel (Raw Nerve Productions, co-writer EVIL DEAD 2)
"Kurly Tlapoyawa is a real find, a burly brew of machismo and ironic detachment, a deft thespian as well as stunt brawler; a megawatt talent on a 40-watt budget... Although viewers are likely to compare The Stink of Flesh to Romero’s zombie trilogy, I felt Phillips’ feature—with its casual attitude towards sex and death as well as its rockabilly backbeat—owes a lot more to L.Q. Jones’ cult film A Boy And His Dog. A Boy And His Dog also features a breakout performance, this one by a young fresh-face named Don Johnson, as well as a dynamic directing debut for Jones. One could easily see The Stink of Flesh having the same cult status..."

But seriously, thanks for ordering the DVD, laudadio76. I hope you dig it! Meanwhile, Phil Davies Brown has posted the interview he did with me over at Horror Asylum. (http://www.horror-asylum.com/frameset.asp?page=http%3A//www.horror-asylum.com/interview/scottphillips/interview.asp) I managed to accidentally give the impression that we shot the movie on a one-chip camera, which ain't the case, but what the hey.
Phil's rather positive review (http://www.horror-asylum.com/frameset.asp?page=http%3A//www.horror-asylum.com/database/reviews.asp%3Fitem%3D4523) of THE STINK OF FLESH is also online, give it a read!

Sorry about my sarcasm, Kemper -- I didn't mean anything by it. Just that reviews are all about opinion, and a movie that four reviewers (so far) have said they liked better than 28 Days Later might be a movie that you think is terrible. While we shot STINK on the same kind of camera they used for 28 Days Later (minus the expensive attachments), obviously we were working on a non-existent budget as opposed to their 9 million dollars. Whether STINK is better or not is entirely up to whoever is watching it -- we did what we could in terms of having an unusual storyline and characters instead of the same old thing, and that isn't gonna be everyone's cup of tea.
Me, I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, while obviously there are things I wish we'd had a little more money or time for. But ultimately, my opinion doesn't count -- it's up to the folks who buy the DVD, and I appreciate your willingness to pony up the dough even when you have misgivings. I hope you'll see what we were after and will enjoy the movie. Thanks, man!

I don't know, it had its moments but all the weird sex stuff, the kid, and all the scenes featuring the abdomen head prosthetic made this movie for me go from good bad, to just plain bad. Everyone else seems to be enjoying the heck out of it though, go figure.

Suprisingly I really liked this movie. Usually I hate it when they put weird sex scenes in horror movies but it was just so funny. Plus the makeup was pretty good and I love how the blood shot straight up from the head whenever a zombie was shot.

So, I just finished watching it, and I must say I did rather enjoy it.
I have a question though. Did anyone else notice the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu/Mixed Martial Arts used by Matool?
He had a zombie in his gaurd and rolled into an omoplata. He was throwing elbows and knees. Also threw some low kicks on one zombie. Then, in the final fight, he put Mandel in a nice triangle choke.
If you don't know wtf I'm talking about, just disregard this.
