| DEAD KEV SAYS: |
I don't know how Steve Niles (30 Days of Night)
does it. The guy has to be the busiest guy in comics
today. Seems like I'm seeing his name on everything.
Now he's back with a second dose of Meeednight
Pulp Presents. I'm really diggin' this MPP
series, so I hope they keep it going. Secret
Skull was very cool, and so far The Lurkers
is even better.
Hector Casanova claims that this his first official
comic. I hope it's not his last. I love the artwork,
it's absolutely perfect for this noir mystery. The
grizzled detective Dietz has seen it all, until
a young child is dug up from its grave and half
eaten. The groundskeeper/security guard is the only
one who witnesses the act. "I have never seen
a thing more terrible," he tells Dietz. There's
not much evidence left behind, except for some old
cloth fibers. When they're analyzed, Dietz begins
to think this isn't like anything he's ever seen
before. If you enjoy a good mystery, this is a good
start. Time will tell just how good.
If you want some more bang for your buck, there's
a four-page short story to finish of issue #1. There's
something amiss in Grayville in An Uncommon Stew
by Nicholas Knight. Rather, there's something seriously
up with the stew that the city's wealthiest man,
Randolph Brackenmire, serves annually at his charity
dinner soirees. Knight's stories can be found in
publications like H.P. Lovecraft's Magazine of
Horror and Canada's Open Space, so he's
no slouch. To my recollection, this is the first
one of his I've read and you can call me impressed.

| SYNOPSIS: |
| Someone’s got a bad habit of chewing on dead
bodies, and L.A. Detective Jack Dietz wants to find
out who it is. He’d also like to survive the
night, and he’d like his marriage to survive
his job. He’s about to learn that we don’t
always get what we want. |
| |
| DEAD KEV SAYS: |
The mystery deepens as it appears the suspect in
the grave desecration is also into murdering and
stealing live children from their home. As Dietz
settles in for the night, he ends up confronting
a creature that isn't quite alive anymore. Is he
here to help detective Dietz? We'll just have to
find out next issue.
If you weren't sucked in during the first issue, you
should be now. It's Niles at his finest. Casanova's
cover to #2 is the best of the four, and damn near
something I could put on my wall. And not knocking
Casanova's work, but I find that the "ghoul"
bares some resemblance to Jack Skellington from The
Nightmare Before Christmas. Cousins perhaps? Naaah.
There's another short story by Nicholas Knight in
this one. It's called Swarm and it's also
first-rate writing. Eli Lacrois' friend Wayne dies
a violent, unexplained death shortly after ending
a cell phone call with a scream of agony. It's up
to Eli to take care of Wayne's now orphaned "dog",
which looks like a cross between a pitbull and a
hyena. What does the cryptic note 'Let him out at
night' mean? Another good story, but the ending
to this one wasn't quite as...conclusive as I would
have liked. Still a good read, though. |
