| SYNOPSIS: |
In the not-so-distant future, an explosion at a
Biotech company results in the release of a chemical
by the name of Chlorotron. In development for the
government, it's a mind-altering drug with a nasty
side effect of reanimating dead tissue.
Five years after the explosion, military survivors
have set up a makeshift base to keep out the zombies.
One of the soldiers, Scott, runs into some trouble
while venturing out to gather food. |

| DEAD KEV SAYS: |
There's no deep storyline anywhere close to these
pages, but that's not the point. Biohazard
is an action/gore comic laced with humor and it's
very effective in its simplicity. Groom certainly
has a unique art style and he's particulary good at
showing what a gunshot (or multiple ones) can do to
a human body, zombified or living. Also impressive
is what Groom does with alternate viewpoint angles
(first-person zombie, close-ups, underneath, etc.).
Sadly, Biohazard is an indie comic series that
only lasted two issues.
Since the comic is self-published, the lettering isn't
quite as professional looking as you may be used to.
Sometimes it's it can run a little small and there's
an occasional misspelled word. Though, on the whole,
it's a very fun read with lots of eye candy! And it
was banned in France, so it's gotta be good. |

| DEAD KEV SAYS: |
The better of the two issues. The artwork in issue
two seems to be a bit more polished, and the action
and gore has been amped up a bit. The deaths in this
issue are even more inspired than the first. Along
with the many headshots, there's a death by grenade
(complete with intestines flying toward the reader),
eye-gouging, brain-eating, squished head, stomped
head, death by a lowering gate, and my favorite, a
slicing off of the face and subsequent spillage of
brain matter. Oh, and a really nasty demise of a soldier
while he sits on the can. All this black & white gore
and the humor is still surprisingly on point. The
storyline progresses as you would expect, there's
still nothing too brain-bending here.
No, it doesn't look like your professional DC/Marvel/Image
release, but this indie series is good stuff, and
easy to recommend. We an only wonder how the comics
would have progressed forward, as a lack of funding
ultimately spelled the end to Biohazard. Justin
Groom plans to revisit the comic with a 10-part mini-series
in 2006. |
